Take ownership of purchasing, supplier performance, inventory and material flow within an established Australian manufacturing business.
CPT Engineering is a family-owned engineering and manufacturing business with a history dating back to 1982. From our Tasmanian roots, we have grown our manufacturing capabilities and customer base and now operate across multiple facilities in Tasmania and south-east Melbourne.
We are looking for an experienced Purchasing & Supply Officer to take ownership of our purchasing function and help us continually improve supplier performance, material availability, inventory control and overall procurement cost.
This is a predominantly purchasing-focused role, but one that sits close to the operation. In addition to leading purchasing activities, you will have oversight of stores, inward and outward goods and dispatch quality checks, giving you visibility and influence across the full flow of materials through the business.
This is a hands-on leadership role suited to someone who understands the demands of a manufacturing environment and can balance cost, quality, stock availability and production requirements.
Position Summary
Working closely with Production, Estimating, Finance and the broader management team, you will be responsible for the effective management of purchasing and stores activities across the business.
Key responsibilities will include but not limited too;
- Leading and mentoring the purchasing and stores team.
- Managing day-to-day purchasing activities and ensuring materials, hardware and consumables are available when required.
- Developing strong, commercially beneficial relationships with key suppliers.
- Negotiating pricing, supply arrangements and purchasing terms.
- Identifying sourcing opportunities and delivering measurable cost savings.
- Monitoring supplier performance including price, quality, reliability and delivery.
- Managing stock levels in line with operational requirements and financial targets.
- Developing appropriate stockholding strategies for critical items, consumables and frequently used materials.
- Improving purchasing processes, controls, systems and reporting.
- Identifying inefficient, reactive or wasteful purchasing practices and implementing practical improvements.
- Monitoring project and production requirements and identifying potential supply constraints before they impact delivery.
- Working closely with Production and Estimating to understand upcoming workload and purchasing priorities.
- Identifying inefficient or wasteful purchasing practices and implementing improvements.
- Maintaining effective purchasing systems, procedures, reporting and controls.
- Managing purchasing requests for equipment, machinery, tools and other operational requirements.
- Providing management with purchasing KPIs, cost information and early warning of potential issues.
The role provides an opportunity to look beyond individual purchase orders and improve how materials move through the business — from forecasting and supplier selection through to receipt, inventory, production and final dispatch. Skills and Experience;
- Demonstrated purchasing/procurement experience,
preferably within manufacturing, engineering, fabrication, construction or a similar industrial environment.
- Strong commercial and supplier negotiation skills.
- Experience managing inventory, stock levels and material availability.
- The ability to interpret production requirements and prioritise purchasing accordingly.
- Experience monitoring supplier performance and developing suppliers.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach and develop a small team.
- Solid problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Confidence working with ERP/MRP or purchasing systems.
- Strong Excel and reporting skills.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- A proactive approach – someone who identifies problems early rather than waiting for them to affect production.
Opportunity; This is an opportunity to take ownership of an important function within a well-established manufacturing business.
You will have the opportunity to influence:
- Supplier strategy
- Purchasing cost
- Inventory | Production performance

CPT Engineering continues to invest in its people, manufacturing capability and growth, and we are looking for someone who wants to contribute to the next stage of that development.
If you are an experienced purchasing professional who enjoys working closely with operations and wants to make a measurable difference within a manufacturing business, we would like to hear from you.
