THE ORGANISATION
ACE Kinetics designs and manufactures the Hoop Drive, a gear mechanism that transmits torque through rolling contact rather than gear teeth. The company is pushing the limits of torque density, currently around 375 Nm/kg.
The Hoop Drive is used in production hardware across humanoid robot joint actuators, space-qualified drives, surgical robotics, automotive driveline programs and industrial wheel drives.
The engineering team includes personnel who have worked on Formula One powertrain and race engineering at Red Bull and Mercedes, at Tesla, and in robotics actuator development over twenty years.
THE ROLE The appointee will hold responsibility for performance engineering of the company's gearing products, operating a rapid design, fabricate and test cycle: identify the limiting factor, model it, revise the design, and validate the change by test.
The appointee will also engage directly with customer engineering teams on test strategy, test results and design decisions.
REQUIRED
- Five to eight years of experience in mechanical design and development.
- Deep working knowledge of bearings and gears. This is the principal requirement and will be assessed during selection.
- Speed and fluency in 3D CAD. Design revisions in this role are completed within days.
- Competence with AI coding tools for building calculation tools and automating engineering processes.
- Well-developed personal systems for managing workload, covering planning, prioritisation,
tracking of commitments and delivery to deadline without oversight.
- Excellent written and spoken English. The position carries direct technical correspondence and discussion with customer engineers.
- Flexibility in working hours to accommodate customers in other time zones.
- The right to work in Australia.
DESIRABLE
- Autodesk Fusion.
- Finite element analysis, instrumentation and data acquisition, or metrology.
- Comfort with CNC machining, and experience working to tolerances below ten microns.
SPECIALIST CAPABILITY
This appointment is intended to add a capability to the business rather than capacity alone. Demonstrated depth in at least one of the following is sought:
- Tribology
- Metallurgy and heat treatment
- CAM and precision machining
- Software automation
- Manufacturing process development
- Factory design and bring-up
- Sourcing and supply chain
- ERP implementation
- Technical sales

REMUNERATION AND CONDITIONS
Remuneration reflects demonstrated capability rather than years of service.
The position is based in Perth. The company's laboratory is in the Perth Hills, and attendance on site is required several days per week on average, including test days. The balance of the week is versatile.
