About the role

As a Rail Labourer (Way Maintainer), you'll play an key role in maintaining and improving Victoria's rail network. Working as part of a dedicated track maintenance team, you'll undertake a variety of hands-on activities that help keep rail services safe, reliable and operating efficiently.

This is an outdoor, physically active role where no two days are the same. You'll be involved in maintaining rail infrastructure, supporting track renewal projects, operating tools and equipment, and assisting with the upkeep of the rail corridor. You'll work closely with experienced team members to deliver maintenance works that ensure the network continues to perform at its best.

Key Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

- Carrying out tasks for the renewal or maintenance work across the rail network

- Participating in the replacement or renewal of rail infrastructure materials i.e. sleepers, rail, ballast, fastenings

- Safe operation of medium plant as required

- Cleaning up plant equipment and worksite and participate in general site maintenance.

- Using & maintaining hand tools and minor mechanical equipment.

- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with appropriate OH&S; standards and regulations.

About you

You take pride in your work, ensuring rail operations run safely and efficiently.



A team player with strong problem-solving skills, you can work independently while following strict safety protocols. The role is well suited to candidates with backgrounds in rail, construction, civil works, labouring, Trades, infrastructure maintenance or other hands on environments who enjoy practical work and being part of a team that delivers critical services to the community.

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following key selection criteria within their application, as this forms part of our merit-based recruitment process:

- A Current Valid Driver’s Licence

- Successful completion of Year 10

- Availability and commitment to work across a night shift schedule

- Demonstrated ability to work safely in a physically demanding outdoor environment.

Desirable Attributes:

- Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure

- Experience working across multiple shift types (day, afternoon, night)

- Familiarity with minor mechanical equipment used in rail maintenance

- Exposure to safety and risk management practices in infrastructure environments

- Previous experience in a manual labouring role

- Previous experience in a construction / civil background

Remuneration for this position will be in line with the V/Line Rail Asset Management Enterprise Agreement 2023 and paid as an IMW (TRACK) 1.3.

The selection process may include aptitude assessments, a behavioural interview and a medical risk category 1 check.

It is expected that all employees complete at least 12 months of continuous service in their current position before making an application for an alternate role. Employees who are in their probationary period at the time of application are ineligible to apply.
