Primary objective

Directly manage, train and supervise the staff within the Road Operations unit to maintain effective and safe road network operations.

Context statement The Road Operations and Traffic Section is a highly dynamic and evolving unit within the Department. The Operations group focus is day to day road network operations, involving both field and office based duties, and is also involved in utilising Intelligent

Transport Systems (ITS) technologies within the NTG road network ensuring the safe use of the road network for all users.





Key duties and responsibilities

1. Manage Road Operations group and lead resources in the use of NT Government road assets, including approved activities

and unscheduled events. Oversee assessment and audits of Temporary Traffic Management (TTM), permit applications, and coordinate incident response.
1. Manage a team of staff, including supervision, assign tasks, manage workloads, monitor and evaluate performance, training

and development.
1. Provide a high level of advice and support to staff, management and clients, and contribute to Departmental policies,

procedures and Northern Territory Government legislation relating to road network management and ensure their application.
1. Participate in emergency management planning and incident management. Manage on-call rostering and fatigue management

for the group.
1. Develop relationships with key stakeholder groups including Traffic Management Association (TMAA) NT, Civil Contractor’s

Federation (CCF) NT and local government councils, to ensure that stakeholders are informed of updates to the NT Government road network.
1. Provide Territory wide advice on Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) to Department officers and external stakeholders.

Review, improve and document Road Operations group business processes and procedures.

Selection criteria Essential

1. A relevant Diploma qualification awarded by an Australian institution, or equivalent; or relevant experience in a field of

technical work closely aligned to the duties of the vacancy.
1. High level knowledge of road asset management and traffic management, as well as relevant legislation and Australian

Standards.
1. Proven experience in the leadership and management of resources in an operational service delivery environment, including

staff rostering, performance, monitoring and reporting.
1. Strong organisational skills and time management to achieve key deliverables of the role while managing the day to day

resources and triaging of urgent network response work.
1. Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively, negotiate and manage

conflict with staff, clients and stakeholders, and an ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
1. High level written and oral communication skills including the ability to prepare design, procurement and project management

documentation.
1. Ability to work standard hours with staggered start times on a weekly roster (0630 and 0930 start times); and participate in an

afterhours on call roster for emergency response.
1. Current Driver’s Licence.

Desirable

1. Current qualifications in Temporary Traffic Management.
