About the Opportunity

Hatchit Studios is seeking an experienced Senior Cyber Threat Analyst / Threat Detection Engineer for a long-term labour hire engagement with a Federal Government department.

The role will work within a Cyber Security team and focus on the research, development, testing and maintenance of threat detection use cases and detection rules across the SIEM, SOAR and EDR technology stack.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced cyber security professional with solid detection engineering, threat modelling and threat intelligence capabilities, including exposure to emerging AI-related security threats.

Key Responsibilities

- Develop threat detection use cases based on threat models, vulnerabilities, intelligence, incidents and industry frameworks
- Develop and maintain detection rules across SIEM and EDR platforms
- Develop playbooks for alert validation and incident response
- Develop and maintain threat models using methodologies such as STRIDE, MITRE ATT&CK; and attack path analysis
- Identify detection opportunities and security monitoring coverage gaps
- Assess emerging threats associated with AI platforms, services and agents
- Develop detection content addressing AI-related risks including data leakage, prompt injection, model abuse and adversarial activity
- Maintain threat intelligence integrations across the SOC technology stack
- Research, develop and tune new detection content in collaboration with Cyber Defence Analysts
- Assist with incident response and the onboarding of new security data sources




- Collaborate with architecture and engineering teams to translate threat modelling outcomes into effective monitoring and response capabilities

Skills & Experience Required

- 5+ years' experience working in cyber security operations
- Demonstrated detection engineering experience across at least two enterprise SIEM platforms, such as Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, QRadar or Elastic
- Strong experience developing detections across SIEM, SOAR and EDR platforms
- Experience with incident response automation and security playbook development
- Practical threat modelling experience using methodologies such as STRIDE, PASTA or MITRE ATT&CK;
- Strong understanding of the cyber threat intelligence lifecycle
- Experience identifying and monitoring AI-related security risks, ideally involving Microsoft Copilot, Azure AI or similar enterprise AI platforms
- Strong communication, organisational and stakeholder engagement skills

Highly Desirable

- Experience developing or working with Sigma detection rules
- Knowledge of AI security frameworks including ASD/ACSC, NIST, MITRE ATLAS and OWASP LLM Top 10
- Experience with EDR technologies such as CrowdStrike, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint or Carbon Black
- Python and/or Bash scripting experience for detection engineering and security automation
- Cyber security certifications such as GIAC, SANS, CISSP, GCIA or GCIH

Security & Work Arrangements

Candidates must be able to obtain an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance.

The role is based in Canberra with hybrid working arrangements. Flexible working is supported, and candidates seeking arrangements outside Canberra may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to business requirements.
