Primary objective

This a senior position that will provide quality epidemiological analysis to inform NT Health’s public health surveillance needs, including related policies and services for Territorians. The focus of this work will be on cancer epidemiology and surveillance; and this position includes a registrar function for the NT Cancer Registry.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide expertise in the design, management and analysis of health information and data; prepare reports and briefing papers, suitable





for high level meetings or publications; and develop evidence to inform, monitor and evaluate policy and operations.
1. Assemble quality population data on health status, risk factors and determinants; and initiate action to determine, improve, and maintain

data quality.
1. Manage and supervise epidemiologists, students and registrars, including: mentoring; building skills and capacity; delegating

responsibilities appropriately; and overseeing work output including reviewing analysis, reports, and memos.
1. Respond and provide advice to inquiries from relevant areas, health professionals, managers, external organisations and the general

community on health statistics and data collections.
1. Prepare and present epidemiological information to a wide variety of audiences, including health professionals, community members,

and ministerial and policy staff.
1. Represent the Branch on committees and working groups (local and national), and co-ordinate stakeholder meetings.
2. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order

to ensure high quality, secure services and workplaces.
1. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Degree in health, epidemiology or biostatistics, and relevant postgraduate qualifications.
2.



Demonstrated advanced experience in the application of the principles of epidemiology and biostatistics; and experience working across

all areas of population health data including: collection, extraction, preparation and validation, analysis and presentation, and dissemination of results.
1. Demonstrated successful experience in the management and supervision of staff and/or epidemiological students and/or public health

registrars.
1. Demonstrated application of cancer epidemiology and surveillance.
2. Demonstrated practical experience in applying data analysis techniques using statistical software, such as STATA, R and Excel, to analyse

and report on health issues.
1. Demonstrated high level project management skills and the ability to manage all aspects of a research project including: funding proposal,

ethics applications, stakeholder management, analysis, writing and presentation, and translation of results into evidence for policy and program development.
1. Demonstrated high level communication skills, both written and oral, and an ability to express complex concepts and information clearly

and precisely to a varied audience.
1. An understanding of the drivers of health inequalities in the NT, including knowledge of the social determinants of health.

Desirable

1. Demonstrated experience in data governance, assessment and management of risks associated with data sharing and release.
2. Demonstrated understanding of the application, interpretation and review of legislation.
