Job Description
Senior Lawyer - Commercial & Civil Litigation
n
MLG Lawyers (Melbourne Legal Group Pty Ltd) is a boutique firm based in Docklands, acting for businesses, company directors and private clients across a broad commercial and civil disputes practice. Our lawyers have direct carriage of their matters, direct relationships with their clients, and a genuine say in how the practice develops.
n
The role
n
We are looking for a senior commercial lawyer to take a leading role in our commercial and civil disputes practice. This is a hands-on position with real autonomy — you will run your own files, deal directly with clients, and do your own advocacy.
n
The work spans:
n
Contractual and commercial disputes
n
Corporations and insolvency matters
n
Property-related disputes
n
Debt recovery
n
You will appear regularly in the Magistrates', County and Supreme Courts, and will brief and work alongside counsel on larger matters.
n
What you will be doing
n
Running a varied litigation caseload from initial instructions through to hearing or settlement, with limited supervision
n
Appearing in interlocutory and directions hearings, mediations and judicial resolution conferences
n
Advising clients commercially and practically on prospects, strategy, cost and risk
n
Drafting pleadings, affidavits, submissions and correspondence to a high standard
n
Managing the client relationship directly,
you will be the point of contact
n
Supervising and developing junior lawyers as the team grows
n
Contributing to business development and the growth of the practice
n
About you
n
Admitted to practice in Victoria with a current practising certificate
n
Minimum 5+ years' post-admission experience in commercial and civil litigation
n
Demonstrated advocacy experience in the Magistrates', County and Supreme Courts (and VCAT)
n
Comfortable carrying your own files with minimal supervision and confident dealing directly with clients
n
Strong drafting, negotiation and commercial judgement
n
Well organised, self-motivated, and able to manage competing deadlines across a busy caseload
n
Interested in building something — not just servicing a file list
n
Candidates with additional exposure to oppression proceedings, regulatory investigations and prosecutions are encouraged to apply.
n
What we offer
n
A senior role with genuine autonomy and direct client ownership from day one
n
Quality litigation work with regular court appearances
n
A clear path to greater responsibility, including scope to lead and grow the practice for the right person
n
Friendly team setting with direct access to the principal
n
Remuneration commensurate with experience, negotiable for the right candidate
