Position Purpose

The Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Aboriginal Focus Worker assists the Coordinator in delivering culturally safe and responsive services to women, including Aboriginal women and their children experiencing domestic and family violence.

The role includes providing case management and support within a short-term crisis accommodation setting, assisting clients to stabilise, provide advocacy support around housing, ensure client safety, and assist with daily activities as required.

The position exercises a high degree of autonomy and provides specialist cultural advice to ensure services are relevant, accessible, and effective for Aboriginal women and their children.

This is a 32-hour per week position worked across four days and is an on-site, face-to-face role which does not include a work from home provision. The job may include community engagement and outreach activities as required to support strong relationships between services and Aboriginal communities.

Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Coordinator, the DFV Aboriginal Support Worker will primarily be responsible, but not limited to,

the following duties:

- Provide culturally safe, trauma-informed support to women, including Aboriginal women and children experiencing domestic and family violence within a crisis accommodation setting;
- Undertake client needs assessment and provide support to clients escaping domestic violence including:
- crisis intervention
- practical and emotional support
- coordination of services
- Liaise with other agencies across the service spectrum to provide comprehensive integrated delivery of services in conjunction with clients;
- Maintain the CIMS client database and ensure accurate, up to date and concise information is recorded for all clients, including contributing to a case plan;
- Participate in the NSW statewide vacancy management system and referral tools;
- Participate in daily handover and team meetings as required, and proactively contribute to program development and undertake related tasks;
- Respond to emergency situations if needed;
- Undertake on-call duties as required, as agreed with the service;
- Participate in service evaluation and planning to identify service delivery gaps and recommended improvements;
- Work in accordance with the Work Health and Safety Act, Risk Management framework and organisational operating policy and procedures.

Special Requirements

This is an Aboriginal identified position. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification under Section 14 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). This position is also designated for a female applicant in accordance with Section 31.

Qualifications, Experience & Selection Criteria

- Minimum Diploma in Community Services, or similar welfare qualification or working towards;
- Demonstrated understanding of domestic and family violence, including its complexities and impacts on Aboriginal women and children, and the ability to respond in a culturally sensitive manner;
- Ability to work with local Aboriginal communities and the broader community to advocate and promote awareness of domestic and family violence;
- Demonstrated commitment to the values of Molonglo Support Services and our mission for people to live in a secure and safe environment;
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and independently without direct supervision;
- Strong understanding of client-centred practice and the ability to engage effectively with clients in crisis using appropriate, trauma-informed approaches;
- Demonstrated ability to assess clients’ needs and provide case management plans;
- Sound knowledge of issues pertaining to domestic violence, and the ability to work within a feminist framework;
- Ability to engage children, young people and their parents/carers and an understanding of the health and safety requirements in providing services to children;
- Ability to think innovatively and creatively to develop tailored client solutions;
- Experience working with Aboriginal and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse women and children in a culturally sensitive manner;




- Experience in record keeping, preparation of reports;
- Ability to use online case management systems and Microsoft Office programs;
- Current NSW Working with Children Check and NSW Police Check.
- Current drivers licence and your own vehicle with comprehensive insurance.

Program and Practice

Undertake client needs assessment for women, including Aboriginal women and their children, and provide comprehensive case management support to clients escaping domestic violence including:

- safety planning and initial assessment of client need
- crisis intervention preparation, implementation, and evaluation of case plans
- practical and emotional support, including case coordination with services and referral to a range of agencies
- Maintain accurate case notes and records in CIMS
- Participate and contribute to regular team meetings
- Reflect on and document regularly personal and team practice to use for continuous improvement and planning
- Support the development, implementation and review of the program and activities with support from the Coordinator and other staff
- Ensure relevant information is communicated to the team through the appropriate channels
- Undertake on-call duties on a rotational basis as required. Staff will be expected to provide primary telephone support and attend the service out of hours for crisis intake, dispute resolution and other issues as they arise.
- Represent the service at interagency meetings as required

Spending receipts/invoices are signed, allocated and provided to the Coordinator for processing within agreed timeframe

Client Engagement and Community Events

Engage in planning and implementation of client engagement activities or community events as per programming

Assist in the co-ordination of specific projects as appropriate

Represent the service and the organisation at community events

Implement initiatives and activities detailed in the operational plan for the Queanbeyan Core and Cluster

Feedback demonstrates high levels of satisfaction

Work collaboratively with staff with community engagement activities

Attend community engagement events together as required
