We need a Chief Maintenance Controller for our drone operations in Adelaide, starting 1 October. We have an ever-growing fleet of drones and clients who ask the impossible. Sometimes a client needs a drone to map an entire forest. Sometimes they need it to spray solar panels. And sometimes, they just need it to work perfectly in a torrential downpour.
Your job is to keep our existing fleet, ranging from 7kg to 150kg, in pristine flying condition, while constantly hacking, modding, and re-engineering them to fit the wild and diverse requirements of our commercial contracts. If you love a job where you alternate between writing code, soldering custom payloads, and deployment testing, this is your launchpad.
What You'll Actually Do
Contract customisation: take client requirements and make it happen through hardware mods and software
Fleet health and diagnosis: monitor telemetry, predict failures before they happen, and run technical triage even when you're 1,000s of km away
Payload integration: interface third-party sensors, cameras, and drop mechanisms with our core drone platforms
Field deployments and testing: take your custom creations out into the wild and validate that your mods hold up in real-world conditions
The official duties too: run scheduled maintenance and before-use inspections across the fleet, sign off aircraft as airworthy before deployment (including for crews on one to two week remote stints), keep maintenance records and fault logs, and carry the CASA Maintenance Controller duties under Part 101 MOS
Keep the base running: set and enforce maintenance SOPs for the Adelaide facility, and manage spares,
tooling, and consumables so crews are never grounded waiting on parts
Level up the pilots: teach field crews basic maintenance so small issues don't need a callout
About You
The tinkerer: half software engineer, half hardware hacker. Equally comfortable debugging a script as holding a soldering iron
The tech: Python and C/C++, proficient in DJI systems, and fast to pick up our custom platforms
The hands: CAD modelling, 3D printing, soldering and wiring looms, battery diagnostics (LiPo/Li-ion), flight controller calibration and firmware, and composite airframe repair
The track record: minimum 3 years professional experience working on drones. No degree necessary, though degree-qualified applicants are preferred
Right to work: Australian citizen, valid driver's licence, willing to travel occasionally (1 to 2 days at a time)
