About the role

Hunter Power Systems | GenRent is seeking a motivated and mechanically minded 1st Year Apprentice Electrician to join our team in Beresfield. This is a unique opportunity to complete your electrical apprenticeship while developing valuable specialist skills in diesel generators, electrical control systems, switchboards, automatic transfer systems and temporary power equipment. You will learn in our fully equipped generator workshop and, as your skills and experience develop, accompany qualified tradespeople to customer sites across the Hunter Region and beyond.

You will work on generator systems ranging from small portable units through to mine specification and large industrial power systems used in mining, defence, infrastructure, agriculture, aged care, construction and commercial facilities.

- Hold a current Australian driver licence, with a minimum P1 licence

About us

Established in 2010, Hunter Power Systems specialises in generator sales, service, repairs, projects and engineered power solutions. Our rental division, GenRent, operates an extensive fleet of generators.



Our Beresfield facility includes a dedicated workshop where our team undertakes generator servicing, repairs, overhauls, upgrades, control-system work, mine-specification modifications and new generator builds.

We are a close-knit local team with experienced electricians, generator technicians and electrical engineering capability.

What you will learn

Working under the supervision of qualified tradespeople, you will progressively learn to:

- Assist with the assembly, wiring, testing and commissioning of generator systems

- Work with generator control systems, switchboards, circuit breakers, batteries and charging systems

- Assist with electrical fault-finding, repairs and preventative maintenance

- Read electrical drawings, wiring diagrams and technical information

- Install and test electrical components, cabling and control equipment

- Assist with generator upgrades, mine-specification modifications and equipment builds

- Gain practical exposure to diesel engines and mechanical generator components

- Service and maintain equipment from the GenRent hire fleet

- Prepare, inspect and test rental equipment before and after hire

- Use electrical test equipment, hand tools and power tools safely

- Attend customer sites with experienced field technicians as your competency develops

- Maintain accurate service records and keep the workshop safe and organised

- Complete the required TAFE studies and workplace training for your apprenticeship

You do not need previous trade experience. We are looking for someone with the right attitude, genuine interest and commitment.

- Be committed to completing a four-year electrical apprenticeship and the associated TAFE studies

- Be interested in electrical systems, machinery, engines or how equipment works

- Be reliable, punctual and willing to learn

- Follow instructions and work safely

- Have good practical, problem-solving and communication skills

- Work logically, carefully and in an organised manner

- Be comfortable working with tools and machinery

- Be willing to undertake both workshop and field-based work

- Work well as part of a small, supportive team

- Hold a current Australian driver licence, with a minimum P1 licence

- Have the legal right to work in Australia

- Be able to meet the inherent physical requirements of the position

- Be willing to complete a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening

Completion of work experience, a pre-apprenticeship course, or subjects involving electrotechnology, engineering, metalwork, automotive or industrial technology will be viewed favourably but is not essential.
