About the role

As an Automation & Control Systems Engineer, you'll play a vital role in shaping the software, control systems and remote operating platforms behind our drilling equipment. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you'll work across software development, control system programming and configuration, and field troubleshooting — from writing and testing code, to programming and configuring rigs during builds and upgrades, to resolving issues on the workshop floor and at customer sites. Beyond development, you'll maintain essential technical documentation — wiring diagrams, IO lists, functional descriptions and fault-finding guides — ensuring clarity and consistency across projects.

This is a hands-on, varied role, ideal for someone who's comfortable moving between a laptop, a wiring diagram and a rig in the field.

Key responsibilities

- Write, maintain and improve source code for remote systems and control logic used on Assent's drilling equipment

- Program and configure drill rigs and control systems for builds, upgrades and customer-specific configurations

- Support commissioning, testing and validation of new systems and software releases

- Diagnose and resolve faults across software, electrical and control system domains — in the workshop and on customer sites

- Produce, review and maintain wiring diagrams and technical documentation

- Develop and maintain operating procedures and fault-finding guides for internal teams and customers

- Provide onsite technical support and feedback to engineering and operations for continuous improvement

About you

- Degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Automation,

or Mechatronics (relevant experience in electronics/software design considered)

- Proficiency in programming (Qt, Linux, C , C, Python, CodeSys), with additional knowledge in IoT and object detection

- Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical, Microsoft Office, and graphic design software

- Demonstrated experience in automation, control systems or electrical control systems — ideally in industrial, mobile plant, drilling, mining or manufacturing environments

- Solid troubleshooting skills across software, electrical and control domains, and solid documentation skills (wiring diagrams, SOPs, fault-finding guides)

- Strong team player, proactive problem solver, and well-organised to manage diverse workload demands

- Clear communicator, comfortable liaising with internal teams and customers

- Current driver's licence and willingness to travel to customer/job sites as required
