Criminal Defence Lawyer – 1 to 2 years post admission experience - Leading Criminal Law Firm - Perth CBD -Full time position The position will appeal to those with an interest in advocacy. You will develop skills in case strategy, forensic and procedural tactics and negotiating criminal and civil matters. The role involves a combination of working independently and in collaboration with an experienced and highly regarded team.

Successful candidate will receive ongoing guidance and mentoring. Our office environment is warm, collaborative, supportive and respectful.

Our practice includes all areas of criminal law in Magistrates, District & Supreme Court, State Administrative Tribunal matters, regulatory & disciplinary prosecutions, traffic matters, restraining orders and extra-ordinary driver’s licence applications. We place client experience and outcomes at the forefront of our firm’s mission. Our staff are honest, ethical, and fair in their dealings with clients, colleagues, and the courts.

Office hours are 8.30am - 5pm or 9am - 5.30pm, with a half hour lunch break and 3.30pm finish on Fridays. Our office is conveniently located in the Court precinct in the CBD. There are ample public transport and parking options nearby.

Due to the nature of the work involving regular court attendance, client conferences and collaboration with colleagues, the role will not be suitable for those looking for a working from home/remotely based role, or those unable to drive.

The successful applicant will need to be in apposition to commence in around 4-weeks from selection.

It is inherent in the nature of criminal law practice that the role will involve viewing evidence of a graphic and confronting nature from time to time. The position will be unsuitable for those who are likely to find such work triggering.

Essential requirements:

- Experience in criminal law and practice.
- An honest and ethical approach to legal practice.




- Ability to communicate effectively with clients and obtain detailed instructions and to formulate advice verbal and written advice and devise case strategy.
- Proven ability to successfully conduct hearings in the magistrate’s court such as trials, sentencings, bail applications and final order hearings.
- Experience in instructing and assisting counsel in the superior courts.
- Sound knowledge of the rules of evidence and rules of criminal procedure, and experience in making relevant applications and objections.
- An analytical mind and eye for detail, and well-developed legal research skills
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills.
- Ability to improvise an argument, problem solve or persuade in a clear, concise, and considered manner.
- Good organisational skills, ability to prioritise, manage time and adhere to timeframes.
- Ability to adapt to a work environment which can be busy and high pressure at times.
- Capable of building rapport with people from a broad variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Driver’s licence and access to a car – the role involves regular attendance at suburban Courts.
- Professional dress, grooming and deportment.
- A National Police Clearance and references required.

Desirable:

- Relevant prior skills and experience in a role involving persuasion, public speaking, prosecuting, associateships, paralegal or law enforcement.
- Understanding of our areas of practice outside of criminal law, including appeals, administrative law, regulatory offences, traffic offences, restraining orders and extra-ordinary drivers licence applications.
