Primary objective The Connected Beginnings Family Liaison Officer works as part of the Connected Beginnings team, leading consultation and engagement with Aboriginal families, community members and organisations in Tennant Creek. This role will support communication between families and early childhood services, so all young Aboriginal children aged birth to 5 years are provided every opportunity to thrive in a positive learning environment.
Context statement
Through a partnership with the Australian Government, Connected Beginnings Tennant Creek is an Early Childhood based initiative targeting vulnerable Aboriginal children from birth to 5 years to improve their social, emotional, and cognitive readiness for school by coordinating service delivery and strengthening family and community engagement.
The Family Laison
Officer works closely with families, health, and early education services to implement appropriate parenting and early childhood strategies that meet the needs of families and community.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist in increasing family awareness and engagement with parenting and early learning support programs that build on families’
strengths and add value to Aboriginal children and their families.
- Work with families to determine the barriers preventing access to early learning and family support programs and provide responsive and appropriate guidance to help them overcome barriers.
- Undertake a range of administrative tasks, including data collection and recording keeping, ensuring accurate reporting processes are maintained.
- Assist the Connected Beginnings team to engage with culturally appropriate practices to support the delivery of integrated service system across health, education, and family services.
- Uphold a leadership role within the community with regards to providing information and advice on early learning and parenting addresses the needs of vulnerable children and their families.
- Establish close working relationships and networks with local community stakeholders, Aboriginal organisations, Government,
and non-government organisations and service providers to communicate and grow the work of the Connected Beginnings project.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal child rearing practices and demonstrated knowledge of early childhood
development in families in remote communities.
- Demonstrated ability to use relevant local language(s) and communicate clearly in English both orally and in writing, and a clear understanding of local and cultural issues in early childhood service provision.
- Experience working as part of an effective team, with the capacity to work unsupervised, and exercise sound judgement.
- Ability to collect, collate and store data in a confidential manner.
- An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures, demonstrating strong negotiating and liaison skills.
- Current NT Working with Children Notice/Ochre Card and current NT drivers’ licence.
Desirable
1. Qualifications in Early Childhood Education and Care or equivalent.
2. Knowledge of the parenting and early childhood service agencies and programs in the local community.
3. Sound computer skills and experience in using Microsoft Office suite of programs.
