Brisbane Grammar School is a non-denominational boys’ school of about 2000 students (Years 5 to12) overlooking the Brisbane CBD. The School maintains a 150-year strong tradition of academic excellence, extensive cocurricular activities and student wellbeing programs. Our Learning Environment In recent years, Brisbane Grammar School carefully audited and reviewed its curriculum frameworks and practices. Our curriculum design processes are led by teachers who continually grow and refine their teaching skills. As a result, we are committed to systematically developing effective thinking cultures within all classrooms and staffrooms.

We plan learning experiences in the language of student thinking and cognition and give feedback and guide learner improvement through distinct values of inquiry. The School has a well-supported and pedagogically advanced Tablet PC program, with all students in Years 7 to 12 enabled for one-to-one learning. Teachers are encouraged to work together to use technology and space in innovative ways, ensuring adaptive and transformative curriculum delivery.

We are growing our capacity to identify and analyse relevant data that helps our teachers to respond to their students’ learning needs. In addition, the explicit teaching of literacy and numeracy informs curriculum design and classroom practice.

Applicants for all teaching positions must be eligible for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers and provide their academic transcripts and should be sympathetic to the aims and ethos of independent schools.

About the Role The Head of Griffith House leads our junior boarding house that can consist of Year 5-8 students, though predominantly accommodates Year 7 & 8 students. This position involves a 0.6 teaching load, resides in onsite accommodation (2-brm apartment) within the boarding precinct of Brisbane Grammar School's Spring Hill campus and attracts a generous PAR payment. The successful candidate will cultivate an environment that ensures each boy has every opportunity to develop socially, personally and academically.

The role is crucial in creating an atmosphere of care in Griffith House where each boy experiences a consistent but customised program, tailored to his needs, that in turn fosters his sense of connection.

The Head of Griffith House will work with the Head of Harlin House (senior house) to manage the operational demands of the boarding precinct. These may include, but are not limited to, parent engagement, staff management, staff rostering, the weekend activity program, processing of leave applications and liaison with key onsite stakeholders (Health Centre, Catering, Security, Maintenance,



Cleaning and Laundry staff). In the wider School community, the Head of Griffith House will also form sound working practices with other members of the Student Wellbeing team, teachers and ancillary staff.

The Head of Griffith House will also have the capacity to establish trusting connections with individual boarders and their families, to build that all-important relationship with home. It is expected that they can effectively implement the routines and protocols that underpin living in a residential setting to ensure each boy is both safe and happy whilst in boarding.

A demonstrated capacity to lead a residential community of students is desirable. Professional Development opportunities will be made available through the Australian Boarding Schools Association (ABSA) and other key professional agencies.

The Head of Griffith House will report directly to the Head of Senior School or his delegate.

HOURS

Required working hours reflect the demands of leading Griffith House which are detailed in the duties outlined below. This role requires availability both before and after school (into the evening), and weekends as required. The precise allocation may be varied by negotiation with the Head of Senior School.

EVENTS In addition to the daily duties outlined, it is expected that the Head of Griffith House or Griffith House Parents will attend various School functions including but not limited to:

- Start of Term career development sessions;
- First day of the boarding term;
- Last day of boarding term;
- Weekly meetings;
- Boarders’ Induction;
- Open Day;
- Annual Boarders’ Dinner;
- Parents Receptions;
- Occasional Public Holiday events, and
- Hospital cover.

While every attempt has been made to capture the specific duties of the Head of Griffith House role, the following General and Specific Duties may be amended as determined necessary by the Head of Senior School or their delegate.. GENERAL DUTIES

- To facilitate appropriate behaviour;
- To encourage boys to maintain high standards of presentation, personal hygiene and grooming;
- To assist boys in developing responsibility and organisational skills;
- To provide emotional support where necessary;
- To be available for boys to speak to about sensitive and personal issues;
- To liaise with parents and/or the Health Centre regarding medical and other appointment;

- To liaise with parents regarding purchases form the Uniform Shop and elsewhere;
- To facilitate the Life skills program for middle school boarders; and
- Accompany boys to medical and other appointments; and

- Assist with administration, written communication and computer-generated data including notices and the newsletter / social media.
- Any other reasonable duties as required.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Mornings

- Supervise wakeup & preparation for School including hygiene and use of the laundry.
- Liaise with boarders re daily cocurricular activity schedules

- Ensure attendance at breakfast, supervision of nutrition and manners
- Assist/supervise clean-up of boys’ areas
- Supervise packing and preparation for School
- Conduct a daily inspection.

Evenings

- Supervision of evening academic prep as required
- Oversee the use of social spaces
- Liaise with boarders re morning activity schedules

- Supervise bedtime including hygiene and use of the laundry.
- Liaise with key onsite staff as required.

Saturday morning
- Oversee execution of GPS sport transport for all boarders (Griffith and Harlin House)

Qualifications and Skills

- Bachelor’s degree in education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Previous experience in a leadership role within a boarding school or similar setting.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to relate to and support students from diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge of child development techniques.
- Familiarity with relevant legal and regulatory frameworks pertaining to boarding facilities.

- Excellent organisational and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage a team and work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
- Demonstrated commitment to the well-being and personal growth of boarding students.
