Demonstrated ability to improve instruction and curriculum with a deep understanding of the science of learning The Head of Science provides dynamic leadership and direction for the learning, teaching and curriculum development in Science across Years 7 to 12. This includes reinforcing and embedding MLC’s Learning Statement and developing a plan for learning that optimises the progress of each student.

The Head of Science maintains a harmonious balance between visionary educational leadership and the effective operational management of the department to ensure that the department delivers a high quality and continuously evolving learning program. This role is responsible for leading staff, managing resources, driving curriculum innovation and contributing to whole-school priorities and initiatives. As a member of the Learning and Curriculum Group, the role carries both strategic and operational accountability.

The Science department at MLC comprises a dedicated and dynamic team of approximately 26 teachers and 10 technicians.

The Head of Science will lead a team of staff to ensure that the curriculum promotes best practice with innovative and age-appropriate learning opportunities for students. This will be achieved through effective leadership, collaborative decision-making, thoughtful delegation and the fostering of strong professional relationships that support a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration within the department.

The responsibilities of the Head of Science include, but are not limited to:

- Work with the Director of Learning & Curriculum, and other Heads of Department/members of the Learning and Curriculum Group, to continue to develop a culture of excellence in learning and teaching at MLC.
- In consultation with the Director of Learning & Curriculum, develop and implement a whole-department instructional approach that ensures effective learning opportunities for all students.
- Use cohort-level data to continuously evaluate and improve curriculum and instruction.




- Drive a focus amongst teachers to use data to inform instructional decisions and optimise student learning.
- Foster a culture of growth, high expectations and feedback amongst staff members to develop a positive and supportive departmental culture, with a commitment to team wellbeing.
- Work with the Learning Diversity team to assist with provision of the learning needs of students.
- Organise department and team meetings that focus on professional learning and sharing of teaching strategies and resources.
- Ensure compliance with the VRQA, ACARA, VCAA and IBO requirements.
- Participate in curriculum and pathways information evenings and address parent queries, as required.
- Work with the Director of Learning & Curriculum and appropriate Heads of School in the annual salary band classification reviews for teaching staff who are eligible and wish to apply to move salary bands.
- Manage the department budget and resources to ensure that resourcing levels enable rigorous and innovative learning programs, ensure responsible allocation of funds and manage expenditure.

About You

- Deep knowledge of contemporary Science teaching, learning and curriculum design, with the ability to lead pedagogical excellence across the department.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships.
- Well-developed organisational planning and decision-making skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage time effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team of professional staff to collaborate and take a leadership role.
- Proven teaching, educational leadership and management skills, with experience in developing team members.
- A commitment to professional growth.
- Ability to manage change and demonstrated ability to support change based on current educational research.
- An understanding of the program requirements for VCE, VCE VET and IB Diploma Program.
- An understanding of the tertiary entrance requirements in Australia and Internationally.
- Appropriate qualifications and demonstrated expertise in teaching students.
- Postgraduate qualifications will be well regarded.
- Acts professionally and maintains appropriate confidentiality.
- Current Victorian Institute of Teaching Registration is required.
- Right to Work in Australia.
- Understand and demonstrate adherence to all College policies.
- Understand the Victorian Child Safe Standards and demonstrate behaviours in accordance with MLC’s Child Secure Program.
