Role Description The Primary Substation Engineer is a full time role based in the Greater Perth Area, with travel to and periods of work from project and substation sites as required. This role involves developing primary substation designs, including equipment layouts, busbar configurations, earthing, and protection interface requirements, in line with industry standards and project specifications. The engineer will support feasibility and concept design, and prepare technical documentation such as drawings, reports, and equipment specifications.

Day-to-day tasks include coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams, liaising with clients and stakeholders, reviewing vendor designs, and supporting construction and commissioning activities. The role also requires ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements while contributing to continuous improvement and knowledge sharing within the team.

Qualifications

- Strong foundation in Electrical Engineering,



including understanding of electricity principles and sound knowledge of applicable standards including AS 2067 and AS/NZS 3000. (Previous Western Power Primary substation design experience is highly regarded).
- Proficiency in primary substation electrical design, including equipment selection, layout, busbar, conductor and cable design, electrical clearances and short circuit force calculations for busbars and conductors.
- Good understanding of power systems study requirements, and their application to primary substation design such as fault level analysis and load flow studies.
- Experience in substation earthing, lighting and lightning protection design, including calculations and equipment selection.
- Knowledge of Power Distribution networks and substation interfaces within transmission and distribution systems.
- Familiarity with secondary substation systems and their interfaces with primary plant, including AC/DC supplies and protection panels
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Experience working on utility, renewable energy, or infrastructure projects, ideally within the substation or transmission environment.
- Ability to interpret and produce technical drawings and specifications and use relevant engineering software tools.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams and engage with clients and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality assurance, and adherence to regulatory and industry standards.
- Willingness to travel to and work from project and substation sites for periods as required.
