About the Opportunity
Our client is a Sydney-based construction business developing an innovative prefabricated wall and floor panel system for the Australian residential market.
The system is designed for houses, duplexes, townhouses and other low-rise residential projects, with key components manufactured off-site and assembled locally in Australia.
The business is currently at an important development and standardisation stage. Rather than immediately delivering a large number of external projects, the current focus is on refining the building system, improving its design and installation processes, and ensuring it meets Australian construction and compliance requirements.
We are now looking for an experienced Residential Project Manager to join the business and play a key role in this next stage.
What Will You Be Doing?
During the first stage, your focus will be different from a traditional Project Manager role.
You will manage the company's own display/development project while working closely with the local management team and the overseas technical and manufacturing teams.
A major part of your role will be to bring your Australian residential construction experience into the development of the system.
You will
- Manage the current display/development project, including programme, budget, quality and site activities.
- Review the building system from an Australian residential construction perspective.
- Work with the overseas technical team to improve product design, construction details and installation methods.
- Help ensure the system and construction processes align with the NCC, relevant Australian Standards and Australian building practices.
- Develop practical construction plans, installation procedures, quality processes and WHS requirements.
- Review drawings and identify potential design,
compliance and buildability issues.
- Share Australian construction knowledge and practical site experience with the overseas technical team.
- Work with engineers, consultants, certifiers, contractors and suppliers where required.
Once the system is further developed and the business moves into external project delivery, your role will expand into more traditional Project Management responsibilities.
You will progressively manage multiple residential projects from handover to completion, including tendering, procurement, subcontractor management, programme, cost, quality and project delivery.
What Are We Looking For?
- At least 5 years' experience in Australian residential construction, ideally across houses, duplexes, townhouses or similar low-rise residential projects.
- Project Management experience with a strong understanding of how residential projects are designed and built in Australia.
- A qualification in Construction Management, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
- Good knowledge of Australian residential construction processes, NCC, relevant Australian Standards and WHS requirements.
- Ability to read and review architectural and construction drawings.
- Experience in project programming, procurement, subcontractor coordination, cost and quality management.
- Strong planning, documentation and problem-solving skills.
- Fluent Mandarin Chinese and professional English communication skills — Mandarin is required for regular communication with the overseas technical and manufacturing teams.
- Current White Card and Australian Driver Licence.
Most Importantly – You Need to Be Curious
Previous prefabricated or modular construction experience is NOT essential.
What is significant is that you are genuinely interested in prefabrication, modular construction and new building technologies.
We are looking for someone who enjoys understanding how things work, asking questions, solving technical problems and improving construction processes.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
Prefabrication, modular construction and off-site manufacturing are attracting increasing attention across the construction industry as businesses look for ways to improve construction speed, consistency, efficiency and scalability.
This role gives you an opportunity to enter this area at an early stage while still using the Australian residential construction experience you have already built.
You won't be joining after everything has already been developed.
You will have the opportunity to be involved in the process of developing, testing, improving and standardising the building system for the Australian market, and then see that system move into real project delivery.
This means you can build experience not only in Project Management, but also in:
Prefabricated construction | Modular building | Construction technology | Product development | Compliance | Off-site manufacturing For someone who is genuinely interested in where residential construction is heading, this is an opportunity to get involved early, develop specialist knowledge and grow with the business as the system moves from development into wider commercial delivery.
