We’re Hiring | Senior Azure Cloud Architect / Engineer

Location: Canberra preferred | Remote arrangements may be considered

Working Arrangement: Remote / Flexible, subject to business requirements

Contract: 12 months + up to 2 × 12-month extensions

Hours: Up to 40 hours per week

Security: Must be eligible to obtain an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance

Level: Senior – EL1 equivalent

Australian Government Opportunity

SkyDB is seeking experienced Senior Azure Cloud Architects / Cloud Engineers to support multiple ICT projects within the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR).

This is an excellent opportunity for experienced Microsoft Azure professionals with strong backgrounds in cloud architecture, engineering, integration, security, automation and enterprise solution delivery.

The successful candidates will work across multidisciplinary teams to design and deliver secure, scalable and reliable cloud solutions while providing technical leadership and architectural guidance across complex government technology environments.

About the Role

Working within the department’s CIO Group, you will contribute to the architecture, design and implementation of enterprise-level Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 cloud platforms.

Depending on your background, the role may have an architecture or engineering emphasis, but candidates should be capable of working across solution architecture, technical design, cloud implementation and stakeholder engagement.

You will work closely with business owners, enterprise architects, developers, engineers, business analysts, Scrum Masters, testers and other technical stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

- Develop enterprise-level cloud platform architectures across Microsoft Azure and M365.
- Design high-level solution architectures for cloud-based systems.
- Develop detailed architecture and implementation guidance for Cloud Engineers.
- Provide technical guidance across the design and build of Azure solutions.
- Analyse business and stakeholder requirements and assess their technical impact.
- Ensure solutions align with whole-of-government standards, enterprise architecture and security requirements.
- Design and support cloud integrations with third-party and enterprise systems.




- Collaborate with cross-functional Agile delivery teams.
- Support platform automation, automated testing, continuous integration and deployment.
- Provide architecture and engineering guidance across cloud security, networking and identity.
- Work with enterprise architecture teams to ensure solutions align with target architectures and technology strategies.
- Incorporate user experience considerations into architectural decisions.
- Promote reusable, configurable and open architectural patterns.
- Support alignment with the DTA Digital Service Standard.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to other team members.

What We’re Looking For The ideal candidate will have:

- 5+ years’ experience implementing and managing cloud systems and technologies.
- Strong Microsoft Azure architecture and/or engineering experience.
- Experience developing enterprise and application-level Azure architectures.
- Strong understanding of cloud integration, networking, identity and security.
- Experience providing technical guidance across solution design and implementation.




- Experience working within Agile multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to work effectively with geographically distributed teams.
- Strong communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to mentor and collaborate with other technical team members.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
- Ability to adapt architecture and delivery approaches as requirements evolve.
- Experience delivering secure, reliable and user-focused enterprise solutions.

Highly Desirable Candidates with the following will be particularly well suited:

- Demonstrated technical leadership across project and operational environments.
- Strong cloud architecture and solution design experience.
- Application and integration architecture experience.
- Infrastructure/platform architecture experience.
- 3+ years designing and documenting architectures for large, complex enterprise systems.
- Experience with AWS and/or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) in addition to Azure.

Government & Enterprise Architecture This opportunity requires architects and engineers who can operate effectively within a complex enterprise environment and ensure solutions remain aligned with broader architectural and government requirements.

Experience with Australian Government ICT environments, whole-of-government standards, enterprise architecture principles and the DTA Digital Service Standard would therefore be particularly relevant.

Security Requirement

Candidates must be eligible to obtain an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance.

Working Arrangements

Canberra-based candidates are suitable for the prospect; however, remote working arrangements may also be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to business needs and agreement with the supervising manager.

Candidates seeking to work outside Canberra will need to clearly nominate their desired working location.
