About the role

This is a specialist second-line risk role responsible for providing independent oversight, review and challenge across Avant's Medical Indemnity insurance business. Working closely with underwriting, pricing, claims, reinsurance and actuarial teams, you will help ensure key risks are identified, assessed and managed within appetite while supporting effective decision-making and regulatory compliance.

Reporting to the General Manager, Group Risk & Compliance, you will play a key role in strengthening risk management practices, supporting governance forums, and providing insightful risk advice to senior leaders.

Key responsibilities

- Provide independent second-line oversight and challenge across underwriting, pricing, claims, reinsurance and reserving activities.
- Lead risk and control assessments, assurance reviews and control effectiveness testing.
- Support the ongoing enhancement of Avant's Risk Management Framework and associated policies and standards.
- Monitor risk appetite, key risk indicators and emerging risks across the insurance business.
- Partner with business leaders to provide practical risk advice while maintaining independent judgement.
- Prepare high-quality risk reporting, insights and committee papers for executive and Board-level audiences.
- Assess the impact of regulatory developments, industry trends and emerging risks on the business.

About You

You are an experienced risk professional who understands how insurance businesses operate and can apply sound risk management principles to provide constructive challenge and valuable insight.

You'll bring:





- 7+ years' experience in risk management within a financial services organisation, ideally in a Line 2 risk function.
- Experience working within an APRA-regulated environment such as insurance, banking or superannuation.
- Exposure to insurance risk disciplines including underwriting, pricing, claims, reinsurance or actuarial processes.
- Strong experience conducting risk and control assessments, issue management and assurance activities.
- Knowledge of APRA prudential standards, particularly CPS 220 and CPS 230.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and business partnering skills.
- Strong analytical capability with the ability to translate complex risk issues into clear, practical recommendations.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Commerce, Finance, Risk or a related discipline.
- Professional qualifications such as RMIA, ANZIIF, FIAA, CA or similar will be highly regarded.
