Senior Tax Accountant
Plantax Pty Ltd | Chadstone, Melbourne (VIC) | Full-time
Plantax is a modern, fast-growing accounting and business advisory practice based in Chadstone. We work with a diverse client base of sole traders, companies and trusts, SMSFs and we're scaling our local leadership team as the practice grows.
We're looking for an experienced Senior Tax Accountant or Tax Agent to take ownership of a client portfolio, provide final review and sign-off on all compliance work, and lead the day-to-day workflow of our delivery team.
The Role
This is a senior, client-facing role for someone who wants genuine ownership not just preparing returns, but reviewing, signing off, and managing the people and workflow behind them. You'll be the final checkpoint before lodgement, the point of escalation for technical and client matters, and a mentor to junior and offshore team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review income tax returns and financial statements for sole traders, companies and trusts (SMSF exposure a plus)
- Prepare and review BAS/IAS lodgements and GST reconciliations
- Deliver end-to-end bookkeeping in Xero — bank reconciliations, journals and management reporting
- Manage full-cycle payroll processing, including STP, superannuation, leave and terminations
- Prepare and review payroll tax returns and reconciliations across relevant states
- Act as the primary liaison with the ATO and other regulatory bodies on compliance matters
- Provide proactive, clear client communication on deadlines, requests and outcomes
- Review and sign off, as the firm's Registered Tax Agent, all work prepared by the team prior to lodgement
- Manage daily workflow, job allocation, deadlines and WIP across the offshore team using XPM and Karbon
- Lead advisory conversations directly with clients — tax planning, structuring, and technical escalations
- Mentor and upskill junior and offshore team members
- Contribute to ongoing process and workflow improvement initiatives
About You — Essential:
- Current Tax Agent registration with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) - preferred
- Minimum 3 years' experience in an Australian public practice accounting workplace
- Strong technical knowledge of Australian tax compliance for individuals, SMEs, companies and trusts
- Proficient in Xero, BAS/IAS preparation, GST, payroll, STP and superannuation obligations
- Demonstrated experience reviewing and signing off work at volume — not just preparing it
- Confident, skilled client-facing communication style, written and verbal
- Excellent attention to detail with strong time management and the ability to meet deadlines across a busy portfolio
Highly Regarded
- Experience with Xero Practice Manager (XPM) and Karbon, or similar practice workflow tools
- Payroll tax exposure and multi-state knowledge
- Experience with trust structures, including distribution minutes and resolutions
- Div 7A awareness and general business advisory exposure
- CA or CPA qualification (completed or in progress)
- Prior experience leading or mentoring an offshore/remote delivery team
- SMSF exposure
What Plantax Offers
- Competitive package, with a clear pathway to further leadership as the practice scales
- Genuine autonomy to lead the delivery team and shape how it operates.
- A varied, national client portfolio spanning compliance and real advisory work
- Modern, cloud-based tech stack (Xero, XPM, Karbon) — minimal legacy admin, more time on client outcomes
- Support for ongoing CA/CPA membership and continued professional development
- A supportive, close-knit local team backed by an established offshore delivery function, so you're leading — not doing everything yourself
- Flexible/hybrid working arrangements
- A stable, well-established practice with clear expectations and a genuine long-term career runway, not just a busy-season contract
