The Opportunity
The City of Perth is seeking building surveying professionals at varying career stages to join its Building Approvals team. This is an opportunity to be exposed to a career advancing capital city context through an appointment that reflects your current qualifications, experience and capability.
Depending on the successful candidate, appointment may be made as a Building Surveyor Cadet (Band 3), Building Officer (Band 4 or Band 5), or Building Surveyor (Band 6).
This opportunity could suit someone currently undertaking relevant tertiary study and looking to establish their career in building surveying, an already qualified individual seeking to apply their knowledge and expand their experience, or an experienced individual that is ready to take responsibility for more complex technical and regulatory matters.
Reporting to the Principal Building Surveyor within our Planning and Sustainability Alliance, whilst dependent on the level of appointment, your responsibilities would primarily include:
- Assessing and preparing building applications, certificates and permits in accordance with relevant legislation, codes, standards and City requirements;
- Undertaking inspections, monitoring and auditing of existing buildings to support compliance with the Building Act 2011 and applicable construction codes and standards;
- Working with building consultants, practitioners, owners and other stakeholders to resolve building approval, technical and compliance matters;
- Supporting investigations and regulatory action to ensure buildings meet statutory requirements relating to public safety, health and amenity; and
- Providing professional and responsive advice and customer service on building regulations, standards and building control matters.
The complexity, level of autonomy and technical responsibility undertaken will reflect the level of appointment. For example, due to their Band 6 classification,
a Building Surveyor provides professional advice on complex submissions, building regulations and performance-based building controls and works with senior practitioners to resolve complex technical matters.
About You
We're interested in hearing from candidates across different levels of building surveying experience.
Building Surveyor Cadet – Band 3
You will be actively undertaking relevant tertiary study and demonstrate the willingness and aptitude to obtain a Diploma in Building Surveying or higher. You'll bring sound communication skills, basic research and problem-solving capability, and an interest in developing practical building surveying experience.
Building Officer – Band 4
You will hold a Diploma in Building Surveying or higher, together with the equivalent of at least one year of full-time building surveying experience. You'll also bring knowledge of the Building Act 2011, sound analytical and problem-solving skills and effective written and verbal communication skills.
Building Officer – Band 5
You will hold an Advanced Diploma in Building Surveying or higher, together with the equivalent of at least one year of full-time building surveying experience. You'll have working knowledge of the Building Act 2011, construction codes and standards, along with strong research, analytical, technical communication and problem-solving skills.
Building Surveyor – Band 6
You will bring demonstrated knowledge and experience applying the Building Code of Australia, Australian Standards and statutory building approval requirements, including the ability to assess complex submissions for compliance. You'll also have a strong understanding of fire engineering principles, building design, construction and services requirements, together with a building-related tertiary qualification, Advanced Diploma in Building Surveying or an appropriate equivalent qualification.
The level of appointment and corresponding salary will be determined based on the successful candidate's qualifications, experience and demonstrated capability against the requirements of the applicable Position Description.

Eligibility
To be eligible to work for us, you will need to demonstrate:
- A right to work in Australia (e.g. a birth certificate, current passport or current visa);
- A satisfactory National Police Clearance (dated within 3 months);
- A current 'C' Class Driver's Licence; and
- A Construction Induction Card (White / Blue Card), or an ability to obtain one.
