Introducing the Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit (NAHMU), a fresh, purpose built 10-bed facility dedicated to supporting adolescents aged 12 to 17 who are navigating complex and severe mental health challenges. This state-of-the-art inpatient unit is the newest chapter in the Child, Youth and Family Mental Health (CYFMH) story, expanding its reach to provide compassionate, specialised care from the earliest stages of life through to young adulthood. NAHMU isn’t just a place of healing, it’s a vital step forward in empowering young people and their families with the support they need, when they need it most.

Are you passionate about improving the mental health and wellbeing of Aboriginal young people and their families? An exciting prospect is available for an experienced Senior Aboriginal Health Worker to join the Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit (NAMHU), where you will play a pivotal role in supporting culturally safe, responsive and person-centered care for Aboriginal adolescents receiving inpatient mental health treatment.

As a key member of the multidisciplinary NAMHU team,



you will provide cultural support, advocacy, liaison and guidance to Aboriginal consumers and their families, ensuring cultural considerations are embedded throughout all aspects of care delivery. This rewarding role offers the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with Aboriginal communities, strengthen trust and engagement with mental health services, and provide expert advice to NAMHU and the wider Child, Youth and Family Mental Health Service on culturally appropriate practices and service delivery.

In addition to supporting consumers and families, you will provide leadership, mentoring and supervision to an Aboriginal Mental Health Trainee participating in the Djirruwang Mental Health Training Program, as well as two dedicated Aboriginal mental health positions within the Child, Youth and Family Mental Health community teams. You will also be supported through strong connections with the Namuragunya Mental Health team and the Manager of Aboriginal Health, ensuring ongoing cultural guidance, professional development and collaboration.

What you will bring to the role

1. Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (this is an Identified position under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977). Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and ability to provide culturally safe and responsive care to Aboriginal a young people and their families
2. Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate III) in Mental Health, Peer Work, Social Work, Community Development, or other health related field and/or alternatively, equivalent experience in a similar industry
3. Extensive experience in Aboriginal health, mental health, or community services, with knowledge of social and emotional wellbeing issues affecting Aboriginal youth.
4. High-level interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to build trust with young people, work with families, and advocate effectively within interdisciplinary teams
5. Awareness and willingness to follow NSW Heath policies and protocols including those related to privacy and confidentiality, Code of Conduct, Work Health and Safety and clinical governance.
6. Demonstrated leadership, mentorship or supervisory experience, particularly with Aboriginal staff or trainees in a health or community setting.
7. Proven ability to develop and maintain partnerships with Aboriginal communities, Elders, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to support holistic and culturally informed care
8. Experience contributing to service improvement, culturally safe models of care or Aboriginal mental health initiatives within a hospital or community setting.
