Mechanical Engineering Technician – Packaging Equipment
Location: VIC
Employment: Permanent, full-time, 38 hours per week
Base salary: $90,000 to $95,000 plus superannuation

About the Role
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technician to join our Packaging Equipment Service Team in Melbourne.
The role involves providing technical support to Engineers and Engineering Technologists in the installation, modification, testing, commissioning and maintenance of packaging and process machinery.
Equipment includes inspection systems, flow wrappers, bag makers, filling machines, cartoners, case packers and associated process equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare technical drawings, installation plans, layouts and diagrams for packaging machinery and mechanical modifications under the direction of Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists.
- Assist engineers and technologists with the design, adaptation and integration of mechanical equipment into customers’ production lines.
- Select appropriate tools, components, measuring instruments and equipment for installation, testing, maintenance and repair work.
- Assemble and install new and modified mechanical assemblies, components, machine controls and associated hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Estimate material quantities, component costs, tooling needs and machine requirements for installations, modifications and repairs.
- Perform and coordinate workshop and customer-site tests of mechanical systems, including commissioning, performance and equipment validation tests.
- Collect and analyse equipment performance data, carry out technical calculations and prepare diagrams and reports documenting test results, faults and recommended improvements.
- Organise and oversee machinery inspections and preventative maintenance, coordinating with customer personnel and other technicians where required.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and equipment breakdowns, identify underlying causes and carry out repairs and adjustments.
- Check that equipment designs, installations, modifications and completed work meet technical specifications, applicable regulations, safety requirements and contractual provisions.
- Maintain accurate installation, testing, service and maintenance records and communicate findings clearly to engineers, colleagues and customers.
Qualifications and Experience
- A relevant Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, or at least three years of relevant experience demonstrating equivalent technical skills.
- Practical experience installing, commissioning, testing, maintaining or repairing industrial machinery or capital equipment.
- Solid mechanical aptitude and the ability to interpret engineering drawings, equipment specifications and technical manuals.
- Experience with mechanical assemblies, machine controls, and hydraulic or pneumatic systems.
- The ability to analyse technical data, undertake calculations and prepare clear technical reports.
- Strong fault-finding, organisational and communication skills.
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively with engineers, technicians and customers.
- A valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to customer sites, including occasional overnight regional travel.
Experience with packaging equipment in the food, beverage or pharmaceutical industries, PLC-controlled machinery and computer-aided drafting software will be highly regarded.
Any electrical installation or repair work must be performed by personnel holding the appropriate electrical licence for the jurisdiction.
