Your new role
As the General Maintenance Officer, you will help keep Sacred Heart Mission’s buildings safe, functional and welcoming for the people who live, work and access our services. We have two vacancies, both full time.
Working across SHM’s diverse property portfolio—including community services, residential and aged care sites, offices, op shops and other facilities—you’ll use your practical repair and maintenance skills to respond to day-to-day maintenance needs, complete preventative maintenance and help keep our sites in good working order.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys variety, solving practical problems and seeing the results of their work. You’ll work independently across multiple sites, while also working closely with program teams, contractors and the Property & Procurement team.
You’ll also play an key role in checking contractor works, making sure jobs are completed properly and identifying issues that need further attention.

Your day to day
Your responsibilities will include:
- Completing general repairs and maintenance across SHM sites, including minor carpentry, patching and painting, door and window hardware, locks, fixtures, fittings and furniture repairs.
- Responding to maintenance requests and prioritising work according to urgency and site needs.
- Carrying out preventative maintenance and routine site inspections to identify defects and emerging maintenance issues.
- Completing room turnarounds between residents, including repairs, patching, painting and readiness checks.
- Making sites safe following incidents such as leaks, damage, break-ins or trip hazards and arranging follow-up works where required.
- Acting as the day-to-day site contact for maintenance contractors,
including arranging access and supporting site inductions.
- Inspecting completed contractor works and following up defects, incomplete works or quality issues.
- Keeping work orders, photographs, maintenance records and contractor observations up to date in SHM’s maintenance management system.
- Maintaining tools, consumables and spare parts and sourcing materials within delegated purchasing limits.
- Supporting office and program relocations, furniture and equipment moves, deliveries, collections and event set-up as required.
- Planning your daily travel across multiple sites to work efficiently and respond to priorities.
- Working safely and within the scope of the role, engaging appropriately qualified contractors for licensed or higher-risk works.
We're looking for someone with
We’re looking for someone who is practical, reliable and confident working independently across a range of sites.
You’ll ideally have:
- Experience in a general maintenance, handyperson or facilities role, preferably across multiple sites.
- Broad practical repair skills, including carpentry, patching and painting, hardware and general building maintenance.
- A strong understanding of workplace health and safety and safe work practices.
- The ability to assess maintenance issues, prioritise competing requests and manage your workload with minimal supervision.
- Good judgement when checking the quality and completeness of work undertaken by contractors.
- The confidence to identify and escalate safety concerns and stop work where something is unsafe.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work respectfully with residents, customers, staff, contractors and people experiencing disadvantage and trauma.
- Confidence using mobile devices and cloud-based systems to manage work orders, photographs and records.
- A practical,
solutions-focused approach and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- The ability to be on call on an alternating roster.
A trade qualification or trade assistant background would be desirable, as would a current White Card (Construction Induction).
No formal qualification is required for this role.

- Base salary of $37.94 per hour (depending on experience) plus superannuation, leave loading and an on call allowance.
