As DWF continues to grow, we are seeking an Associate (1-3 PQE) to join our Defendant Insurance team in Brisbane or the Gold Coast. You will work closely with Senior Associates and Partners on a range of insurance litigation matters, applying your technical expertise and commercial awareness to deliver outstanding outcomes for clients.

Responsibilities
- Contribute to the efficient management of matters by applying technical and legal expertise while supporting practice group objectives.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and industry professionals to support business growth and collaboration.
- Demonstrate sound professional judgement, assess risk appropriately, and provide practical solutions to client matters.
- Develop and maintain technical, legal, and commercial knowledge through training, experience, and awareness of industry developments.
- Manage a mixed portfolio of workers' compensation, employment and insurance matters from inception through to resolution.
- Provide strategic advice on liability, quantum, claim management and litigation risk.
- Prepare statutory advices, reasons for decision, liability responses and complex legal opinions, including regulator appeals.
- Conduct investigations and analyse medical, factual and expert evidence.
- Manage litigated matters, including pleadings, disclosure, witness preparation and interlocutory processes.
- Represent clients in settlement negotiations, mediations, compulsory conferences and court proceedings.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with claims professionals, insurers, self-insured organisations and other stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities to resolve matters efficiently and achieve commercial outcomes.
- Assist with training, mentoring and supervising junior lawyers and support staff.
- Contribute to business development initiatives, client presentations, industry events and thought leadership activities.
- Contribute to financial and business performance through effective time recording, achievement of billing targets, business development activities, process improvement initiatives, and a commitment to DWF's values and culture.
What will help you succeed in this role?
- 1 to 3 years post admission with experience in litigated recovery matters
- Relevant qualifications and experience in the legal field, with strong legal knowledge and the ability to apply it effectively.
- Strong communication skills, able to explain legal matters clearly in both written and verbal form.
- Flexible and team-oriented, able to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively with others.
- Able to work independently, take ownership of tasks, and manage responsibilities with appropriate supervision.
- Committed to continuous learning and development, while supporting and mentoring junior team members where appropriate.
