Lead two busy Council workshops. Keep our fleet moving, our people supported and our community operating.

This is an opportunity to step into a hands-on leadership role where your mechanical knowledge, people skills and ability to keep things moving will make a genuine difference. As Supervisor Workshops, you will oversee the day-to-day operation of Council’s fleet workshops at Coonabarabran and Coolah, leading a diverse team responsible for maintaining and repairing light and heavy vehicles, mobile plant, and a variety of equipment.

You’ll coordinate workflow, allocate and prioritise jobs, monitor quality and productivity, and make sure the right work is being completed at the right time. Working closely with the Manager Fleet Services and operational teams, you’ll help balance reactive repairs with planned and preventative maintenance to maximise fleet availability and minimise downtime.

You’ll bring strong mechanical knowledge and the confidence to provide practical leadership in a busy operational environment. A relevant trade qualification — ideally in heavy vehicles, diesel fitting or a similar discipline — will be highly regarded, although candidates with light vehicle qualifications and strong workshop/service advisor experience are encouraged to apply. You’ll oversee the quality of work completed by mechanics, apprentices and trainees, provide guidance where needed, and ensure apprentices and trainees receive appropriate workplace support and development. Just as importantly, you’ll be someone who can build trust, communicate clearly and bring a team of different skills and experience together around common goals.

There’s plenty of variety in this role. You’ll schedule servicing and repairs, create and monitor job cards, coordinate parts and external providers, monitor workshop expenditure and help manage budgets. You’ll also play a key role in ensuring vehicles and plant are protected, compliant and ready for work — including coordinating annual inspections and registration requirements and supporting Council’s obligations as an authorised inspection station. You’ll monitor WHS across both workshops, maintain appropriate records and systems, and use fleet/workshop information to identify recurring issues, improve reliability and make informed decisions about maintenance and resources.

We’re looking for someone who combines technical capability with genuine leadership. You might already be supervising a workshop, coordinating fleet maintenance or working as a senior mechanic or service adviser ready to take the next step. You may have formal leadership experience, or you may have developed your leadership skills through mentoring apprentices, leading jobs, coordinating crews or taking responsibility outside your formal position. Either way, you’ll be organised, accountable, safety-focused and comfortable making practical decisions in a changing environment. A current Class C licence is essential; MR, HR or HC, Authorised Vehicle Inspector accreditation, frontline management qualifications and experience with fleet/workshop management systems will be highly regarded.

This position can be located in Coolah or Coonabarabran as you will be required to split your time between the 2 workshops.

Coolah is situated on the picturesque Coolaburragundy River and nestled in a valley of the Liverpool Range. The town is surrounded by undulating hills and fertile river flats and is an attractive service town for the surrounding agricultural district. Only an hour south east of Coonabarabran, close to major centres of Dubbo and Mudgee,



and with the nearby Coolah Tops National Park offering rugged natural beauty and adventure, Coolah delivers the best of country living.

Coonabarabran, known as the Astronomy Capital of Australia, which is midway between Melbourne and Brisbane and is known for its magnificent landscape and stunning night skies. The town has medical services, excellent schools, a variety of sporting and social clubs and a thriving tourism industry. With the nearby Warrumbungle National Park, which is also Australia’s first Dark Sky Park, there is plenty to do and explore whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation.

Selection criteria include:

- Relevant trade or vocational qualification in automotive/mechanical services, or relevant qualification and substantial experience in automotive service advising, workshop control, fleet maintenance or service management.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, coordinating or controlling work within a mechanical workshop, automotive service operation, fleet maintenance function or similar environment.
- Sound technical knowledge of the servicing, maintenance and repair of light vehicles, heavy vehicles and mobile plant, with the ability to understand mechanical faults, maintenance requirements and technical information.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate workshop workflow, allocate and prioritise work, monitor progress and manage competing operational requirements.
- Demonstrated leadership and people management skills, including the ability to supervise, support and develop tradespeople, apprentices/trainees and other workshop staff.
- Sound knowledge of preventative maintenance principles, service schedules and vehicle and plant inspection, registration and compliance requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate contractors, suppliers, parts and external service providers to achieve timely and cost-effective maintenance and repair outcomes.
- Sound knowledge of WHS requirements, risk management and safe work practices within a workshop, fleet or comparable operational environment.
- Well-developed communication and customer service skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with operational staff, managers, tradespeople, contractors and suppliers.
- Well-developed organisational, problem-solving and time-management skills, including the ability to manage priorities across multiple sites and a diverse fleet.
- Sound computer literacy and the ability to use fleet, workshop or asset management systems and maintain accurate service, maintenance, inspection and compliance records.
- Current Class C Driver Licence.

It's a plus if you have

- Trade qualification as a light or heavy vehicle mechanic, diesel fitter or equivalent.
- MR, HR or HC Driver Licence.
- Authorised Vehicle Inspector accreditation.
- Qualifications in frontline management, leadership or supervision.
- Experience managing or coordinating maintenance for heavy vehicles, civil construction plant or other complex mobile plant.
- Experience within a local government, civil construction or comparable operational environment.
- Experience using fleet management, workshop management or asset management software.
