The role provides elevated technical capability, supports first-response incident actions, verifies plant condition after maintenance or resets, and guides technicians in executing operational tasks with accuracy and discipline. This position supports STACK’s 100% uptime commitment through strong operational judgement, trend awareness, structured troubleshooting and the ability to stabilise plant conditions within authorised boundaries. The Senior Technician also enhances shift performance by coaching team members, refining documentation quality and maintaining a concierge-level customer service approach in all interactions with customers, visitors and stakeholders.
About the Role
As the senior technical operator on shift, you’ll play a critical role in keeping STACK’s Melbourne Data Centre safe, stable and operational around the clock. You’ll combine hands-on technical capability with sound judgement, helping technicians respond effectively to plant conditions, operational events and maintenance activities.
You’ll work across critical electrical, mechanical, cooling, controls and life-safety systems while using BMS/EPMS data, structured inspections and technical documentation to identify issues early and support reliable plant performance.
Key Responsibilities

- Operate critical electrical and/or mechanical systems within approved procedures and authorisations.
- Provide senior technical support to shift technicians, including task prioritisation and procedural guidance.
- Troubleshoot abnormal conditions, apply authorised stabilisation actions and escalate with clear technical information.
- Support incident response,
including containment, technical communication and event documentation.
- Conduct enhanced plant rounds covering thermal condition, capacity, vibration/noise, leaks and set-points.
- Identify trends, weak signals and reliability risks and recommend preventative actions.
- Coordinate vendors and on-shift work while maintaining permit-to-work, isolation and LOTO controls.
- Verify plant condition, alarms, redundancy and load paths following maintenance, resets or configuration changes.
- Maintain high-quality shift logs, handovers, event records and CMMS updates.
- Coach technicians and support onboarding, training and development across the shift.
- Contribute practical operational insights to procedure reviews, drills, readiness activities and continuous improvement.
- Maintain a concierge-level customer service approach with customers, visitors and stakeholders.
This role does not perform licensed electrical, mechanical or refrigeration work. Trade-restricted activities are completed by appropriately qualified and licensed personnel. The Senior Technician focuses on operational system management, first-response stabilisation, verification and coordination.

Relevant experience may come from Data Centres or comparable critical environments such as hospitals, utilities, Defence or industrial facilities.
You’ll bring:
- Experience operating and monitoring critical power and cooling systems.
- Strong knowledge of systems such as UPS, generators, switchgear, PDUs/PMMs, ATS/STS, CRAC/CRAH, chilled water systems,
pumps and controls.
- Hands-on experience with operational inspections and first-response stabilisation.
- Experience using BMS/EPMS and CMMS or similar operational workflow systems.
- Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, technical drawings and OEM documentation.
- Solid understanding of permit-to-work, isolations/LOTO and operational risk controls.
- Strong troubleshooting and technical decision-making skills within authorised boundaries.
- Clear written and verbal communication for shift handovers, incidents and customer updates.
- Contractor coordination capability and a strong commitment to operational discipline.
- A willingness and ability to coach others and improve team execution.
- Availability to work a rotating 24/7 roster, including nights, weekends and public holidays.
- Legal entitlement to work in Australia and the ability to meet applicable pre-employment and Data Centre security requirements.
