The Role
In this role you will report on the news and events from Queensland state parliament, breaking agenda-setting stories and develop distinctive and impactful content that cuts through to audiences and demonstrates how political issues relate to and impact them. To achieve this you will need to cultivate and maintain an extensive contact base from which to break stories and deliver cross platform or platform-specific stories for the ABC’s digital, social media or broadcast channels/platforms.
The Job
You will also:
- Promptly and accurately file information to all platforms during quick-breaking news events.
- Generate stories that hold power to account, and are relevant to a broad section of Australians and reflect the cultural, geographic and socio-economic diversity of the country.
- Work closely and effectively with producers, editors, and colleagues in the newsroom and around the network.
- Actively engage with communities to find and tell stories that are relevant for them and in line with the News strategy.

About You
We are seeking a Journalist with experience generating original stories of state and national significance, with a demonstrated ability to develop story ideas, chase down fresh angles and deliver engaging news across the ABC’s platforms.
You will also have:
- Solid background in and understanding of politics, the workings of government,
society and business across Queensland.
- An impressive list of contacts who can help you verify and deliver strong State Politics stories.
- Experience writing for digital and/or broadcast platforms, with a proven track record of creativity in tailoring the treatment of stories to maximise their impact and engagement.
- An ability to bring moderately complex issues to life using explainers, case studies, graphics, and other digital and visualisation techniques, with accomplished live presentation skills, particularly during breaking news or rolling coverage.
- A demonstrated and ongoing interest and passion in finding and telling stories that reflect Australia’s diversity.
