Job Description
Public Sector People is partnering with a Queensland State Government Department to source an experienced AO6 Senior Financial Accountant for their Finance team. This is a contract role running through to 31 January 2027, based in Brisbane CBD.

About The Team
n
The Corporate Finance team supports the Chief Finance Officer in leading the department's financial accounting processes and policies. The team plays a key role in the preparation of the department's financial statements and in developing operational policies, procedures and practices that support sound financial management.

Your Role
n
Reporting into Corporate Finance, you'll bring solid technical financial accounting expertise to support internal controls, compliance and audit activity, while contributing to the department's month-end, EOFY and financial reporting obligations.

Your Responsibilities
n
n
- Monitor key internal controls, finance systems and assurance activities to validate financial compliance
n
- Develop and implement internal controls, proactively identifying risk
n
- Provide expert advice on the resolution of internal and external audit issues
n
- Apply expert knowledge to the design and implementation of financial processes and procedures, including maintenance of the department's Financial Management and Practice Manual (FMPM) and financial delegations
n
- Contribute to the CFO Assurance Plan and related activities supporting the CFO assurance statement
n
- Provide financial management advice and support to departmental staff
n
- Contribute to end-of-month and end-of-financial-year activities, including journal review and preparation
n
- Conduct financial reconciliations, ensuring integrity of the department's general ledgers
n
- Support the identification of training needs in financial accounting and contribute to training program development
n
- Maintain the integrity of the department's financial accounting records and systems in line with accounting standards, legislative and departmental requirements
n
- Assist with financial system upgrades, enhancements and testing
n

What We're Looking For
n
n
- Demonstrated experience in a similar Senior Financial Accountant role, ideally within Queensland State Government or the broader public sector
n
- Strong technical financial accounting knowledge, including internal controls, reconciliations and audit processes
n
- Experience contributing to financial statement preparation and month-end/EOFY processes
n
- Tertiary qualification in Commerce, Business or Accounting, and/or membership with CA ANZ, CPA Australia or equivalent (highly regarded, not mandatory)
n
- Ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders across all levels
n
- Must be available to start immediately
