The Role The Defence Royal Commission Program Management Office (DRCPMO) is seeking to establish a merit pool to fill current and anticipated vacancies across a range of EL 1 Assistant Director roles. The roles will be responsible for building and sustaining high-performing teams that deliver outcomes supporting Defence’s oversight of the implementation of recommendations arising from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide (RCDVS).
The roles will be responsible for functions including Stakeholder Engagement, Ministerial Support, Program Oversight, Program Governance and Program Risk. Defence is seeking enthusiastic people with excellent, policy, governance and stakeholder engagement skills to work in the Program Management Office, overseeing one of the largest reforms across Defence.
About our Team The Defence Royal Commission Program Management Office (DRCPMO) is responsible for the governance and oversight arrangements for the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide (RCDVS) Defence Implementation Program. The DRCPMO coordinates Defence’s internal implementation efforts and ensures consistent oversight across all recommendations.
The DRCPMO
- Tracks the lifecycle and progress of each recommendation;
- Coordinates and consolidates reporting across Groups and Services;
- Maintains appropriate governance controls and the suite of program management documents;
- Ensures the program meets its governance obligations and standards.

The successful candidates will have experience in leading teams, strong relationship management and coordination skills, and the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences including across both APS and ADF personnel.
Formal Program Management Qualifications and/or a demonstrated ability to support development, interpretation and application of robust, transparent, and effective governance are highly desirable but not a pre-requisite.
The successful applicant may undertake the following key duties including, but not limited to:
- Leading and managing a small team by providing clear and consistent communication, setting clear performance and behavioural standards, managing performance, delegating responsibility and guiding and developing people.
- Developing and managing stakeholder relationships through the provision of expert advice, effective communication, negotiation and issues management to ensure stakeholders are engaged throughout the Program.
- Identifying emerging stakeholders and engagement opportunities in line with future organisational needs/direction and a changing environment.
- Providing expert advice on policy,
complex problem solving and issues management for internal and external stakeholders.
- Establishing and overseeing governance controls to support an evolving program and developing products and processes to support this.
- Providing expert advice and information to PMO staff on Program controls and emerging issues and present recommendations to support effective and efficient program governance.
- Interpreting and ensuring appropriate reflection of Government and Defence policies, concepts and strategies applicable to the development of Program documentation.
- Delivering and enabling strategic Program-specific communication efforts in order to respond to strategic communication products, and provide advice and support to communication efforts across the DRCPMO.
- Preparing Program progress content and coordinating internal and external stakeholder inputs to support development of Ministerial whole-of-government and enterprise reporting, and briefs for Senate Estimates and sitting weeks.
- Providing clear, accurate and timely advice and guidance to stakeholders on Defence and Veterans' Service Commission (DVSC) related matters.
- Preparing high-quality reports, briefs, minutes, talking points and correspondence tailored to diverse audiences.
- Representing the agency’s position in the context of more complex issues in appropriate stakeholder forums and engagement activities.
Security Clearance:
Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Baseline Vetting” level
