Teaching Service Position Information St George Hospital School is a NSW Department of Education School for Specific Purposes. The school operates from two locations occupying a classroom within the Paediatric Ward of St George Hospital, Kogarah NSW and a classroom within the grounds of Arncliffe West Infants School. The school provides educational support to students from Kindergarten – Year 12 from schools from all educational sectors who are inpatients at the hospital and those who have experienced complex health from DoE schools in the metropolitan south.

The school has a robust sense of working with the community, forming significant partnerships with families, South Eastern Local Health District, NSW Department of Education schools, allied health professionals, other educational sectors and external service providers. These partnerships are imperative and form the basis for all students learning continuity, achievement, sense of connection and success.

The Assistant Principal Learning and Support role at St George Hospital school will work collaboratively with census schools and health professionals as part of the broader Team Around a School (Riverwood Education Office), supporting students with complex health needs, transition support, and mental health.

In this role, you will focus on coordinating evidence-based programs and initiatives attuned to individual school and regional priorities, with a strong emphasis on fostering inclusive environments and meeting the specialised learning and support needs of students. You will provide expert guidance to teachers and school staff through professional learning activities, network meetings, and tailored advice, ensuring best practice in both educational and health-related support. This position is critical to empowering students to successfully navigate transitions, access appropriate health/mental health supports, and thrive within their school communities.

The St George Hospital School Outreach Class is a unique program designed to provide intensive support for ten students from Years 7 to 10,



referred from DoE schools who have encountered barriers to regular school attendance due to internalised mental health challenges and/or trauma. Placement is offered for two terms with ongoing review processes in place. Each student has a Personalised Learning Plan to support increased engagement, the continuity of learning, wellbeing and a sense of connection.

Staff are committed to fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and supported. The goal is to ensure continuous and increased educational engagement is achieved through tailored, compassionate and effective teaching methods.

The program serves as a short-term tutorial and wellbeing intervention, specifically aimed at focused intervention, designed to facilitate re-engagement with the educational process, helping students to identify their educational pathway and transition whether it is a return to their census school or a referral to a mental health school setting through the access request process.

Specific Selection Criteria In addition to the general selection criteria, approval to teach students with support needs and/or experience. Capacity to provide specialist assistance to students in regular classes with additional learning and mental health support needs

1.Demonstrated ability to case manage students with complex health and mental health conditions, providing support for students and census schools.

2.Highly developed organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively at both school and network levels to build positive relationships with students, census school staff, key stakeholders, and external agencies.

3.Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with Student Wellbeing Support – Team Around a School staff and St George Hospital School leadership to contribute positively to workplace culture, the School Excellence Plan, NSW Department of Education regional initiatives, and the Plan for NSW Public Education.

4.Exemplary experience providing professional support to teachers and school staff through the delivery of professional learning activities, facilitation of network meetings, and provision of individual advice and guidance.

learning and classroom practice 2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs 3.

Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams 4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents 5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning 6.

Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy Conditions An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

Special Notes The commencement date for this position will be day 1 of the 2027 school year.

Staff working in schools within hospitals and youth justice centres must follow any vaccination requirements of NSW Health and Department of Communities and Justice respectively.

It is a requirement for all staff who work at St George Hospital School/ Outreach Class and NSW Department of Education Hospital Schools to participate in the NSW Sydney Local Health District Screening & Vaccination Assessment and annual Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Program.
