The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Fibre Core Designer to join our Network Engineering team and play a key role in the planning, design and evolution of our national fibre core network.

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly technical telecommunications skilled who enjoys solving complex network challenges, working with cutting-edge fibre technologies, and delivering high-quality network designs that support business growth and customer outcomes.

As a Fibre Core Designer, you will be responsible for the end-to-end technical planning and design of the fibre core network. Working closely with Network Planning, Construction, GIS and Delivery teams, you will translate network capacity requirements, customer demand and network change initiatives into safe, scalable and standards-compliant fibre designs.

You will play a critical role in maintaining accurate fibre records, planning network capacity, supporting network growth initiatives and ensuring designs are delivered right first time. Your work will directly contribute to the resilience, performance and future scalability of Vocus' national network.

What you'll be responsible for

- Design and plan logical optical fibre routes for recent customer services and network expansions.
- Meet established KPIs and SLAs for GIS and design deliverables.
- Prepare high-quality design documentation including:
- Scope of Works (SoW)
- Line diagrams
- Cutover schedules
- Construction design packages

- Validate network designs to ensure compliance with Fibre Engineering Standards and industry best practices.
- Support network upgrades, expansions and integration of new technologies across the fibre network.
- Provide technical SME guidance on fibre architecture, capacity planning and design standards.
- Collaborate with GIS teams to:

- Validate geospatial data
- Digitise optical fibre routes
- Generate maps and reports
- Provide spatial insights supporting design decisions

- Maintain accurate fibre records, splice schedules and capacity planning data.
- Work closely with engineers, project managers, delivery partners and contractors to deliver quality outcomes.
- Participate in an on-call roster to support fault resolution and provide assistance to the National Operations Centre (NOC).




- Support service delivery activities and assist during fault situations within core business hours.
- Undertake additional duties as required to support business objectives.

What you'll bring to the role

You are an experienced fibre design professional with robust technical expertise across core network infrastructure, fibre planning and GIS systems. You thrive in fast-paced environments, take ownership of your deliverables and are passionate about delivering accurate, high-quality network designs.

Essential Skills & Experience

- Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, GIS, Engineering or a related discipline.
- 5+ years' experience in telecommunications network planning, fibre design or telecommunications engineering.
- Strong understanding of:
- Physical and logical fibre network design
- Fibre topology and core network architecture
- Optical transport systems
- Data centre and facility standards including rack layouts, patching and cabling pathways

- Advanced experience using QGIS (preferred) or ArcGIS for fibre route validation, spatial analysis and map generation.
- Strong analytical, planning and documentation skills.
- Experience developing and maintaining:

- Fibre records
- Splice schedules
- Design artefacts
- Capacity planning outputs

- Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver against deadlines.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Proficiency across Microsoft 365 applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio and Project.

Desirable

- NV1 Security Clearance (or eligibility to obtain).
- Experience working within carrier, service provider or large-scale telecommunications environments.
- Knowledge of national telecommunications standards and fibre engineering practices.
