What we do The Telecommunications and Network Engineering (TNE) Branch sits within the Infrastructure and Operations (I&O;) Division in the Technology and Digital Programs (TDP) Group.
The branch is responsible for delivering contemporary, resilient and high-performing network and telecommunications services that empower our staff, partners and customers to connect, collaborate and deliver with confidence – from anywhere, anytime.
Our focus is on innovation, security and reliability - ensuring the right technology foundations are in place to support the agency’s digital ambitions and the Australians who depend on our services.
The branch delivers Network, Telecommunications, Gateway and Data Centre connectivity for Services Australia and shared service partners. Our Network covers more than 1,000 locations across Australia and supports secure Tele-Platforms, Networks and Gateway Services for other Government agencies.
Our core branch operations enable the agency to deliver secure and reliable IT solutions and services to customers, partners and staff.
About the role
Infrastructure Engineering Experts manage and maintain ICT infrastructure platforms and services, including design, configuration, deployment, security and operations.
Infrastructure Engineering Experts use deep technical knowledge to deliver reliable, secure and high-performing services. They provide authoritative technical advice, support operational direction and lead the management of complex infrastructure environments.
At the EL1 level, the role operates with a high degree of independence, setting priorities, managing outcomes and influencing decisions in line with business objectives. The role may lead staff, drive improvement and contribute to broader organisational outcomes.
We are recruiting across two technical streams:
- Data Centre & Network
- Gateway Services
Both roles require leadership and management skills
- Lead and manage a team to increase performance and engagement through coaching, capability development, performance management, and health and well being support.
- Lead and evaluate operational practices to ensure continuous improvements; contribute to strategic planning.
- Effectively engage and communicate technical information with internal and external stakeholders with varying technical understanding and literacy.

Data Centre & Network The Data Centre & Network stream, commonly referred to as Data Centre Network (DCN), is responsible for the secure, reliable and high-performing network foundations that support Services Australia’s critical systems and services. The team manages complex data centre networking environments, including Cisco ACI, Nexus switching, F5 application delivery, IPAM/DDI and related infrastructure. DCN plays a key role in maintaining availability, resilience, cyber compliance and lifecycle management across production environments, while supporting major infrastructure changes, technology refreshes and continuous improvement through automation and up-to-date network engineering practices.
Gateway Services
Gateway Services stream is responsible for managing the secure internet gateway connectivity for Services Australia and its shared services agencies/departments. The Gateway Services team plays a vital role in securing networks by managing and controlling data flows between different security domains. The team enforces security policies and helps protect our systems from external threats.
The team specialises in internet routing, enterprise networking techniques including Cisco ACI and Nexus switching, firewall management, DNS solution, proxy management including the secure web gateway and other cutting-edge network security platforms.
We ensure the gateway infrastructure adheres to governance policies and compliance requirements in accordance with the Information Security Manual (ISM), Essential Eight (E8) and Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF)
Stream 1: Data Centre & Network
- Lead the support and administration of large-scale enterprise Data Centre Network environments, including Cisco ACI, Nexus Switching, F5 Application Delivery Controllers and IPAM/DDI services.
- Lead troubleshooting and resolution of complex network, application delivery, DNS, DHCP, IP addressing and infrastructure performance issues.
- Plan and implement infrastructure changes, hardware refreshes, software upgrades and lifecycle management activities in production environments.
- Support modern network engineering practices, including software-defined networking, policy-based networking, network resilience, high availability and automation.
- Develop and maintain automation or scripting solutions, including Python, REST APIs or Infrastructure as Code practices,
to improve consistency, efficiency and reliability.
- Provide technical leadership and advice to stakeholders, vendors and internal teams to support secure and reliable data centre network services.
Stream 2: Gateway Services
- Lead and undertake Gateway systems administration on a range of platforms including:
- Palo Alto Firewall
- Infoblox DDI Solution
- Email Security Solution
- Proxy Solution (F5/Blue Coat)
- Zscaler and VPN Technologies
- Cisco Routers, Nexus Switches and ACI Fabric
- Scripting & Automation
- Network Analysis and Monitoring Tools
- Lead the investigation and resolution of day-to-day Gateway Business As Usual (BAU) operational/cyber issues and incidents.
- Manage the day-to-day workloads and priorities of allocating the ticketing queue against available resources and expected service level agreements.
- Monitor the network health of the devices and recommend technical enhancements to infrastructure.
- Produce clear technical documentation including standard operating procedures, design documents and network diagrams.
- Engage stakeholders to understand requirements and identify technology solutions that follow accredited Cyber and Architecture frameworks to ensure a robust security posture.
- Ensure gateway infrastructure adheres to governance policies and compliance requirements in accordance with the Information Security Manual (ISM), Essential Eight (E8) and Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).
Essential Requirements
- Security Clearance level required: Negative Vetting Level 1 (or ability to obtain and maintain)
Desirable Qualifications
- Relevant ICT qualifications or equivalent experience.
- Experience working in complex ICT infrastructure environments.
- Experience leading or managing work and/or teams.
Work environment
- Participation in an on-call roster (7 day roster – 5pm to 8:30am weekdays and all day on weekends and public holidays)
In accordance with section 22(6) of the Public Service Act 1999, Services Australia requires applicants to be Australian citizens to be eligible for employment with Services Australia.
An applicant’s suitability for employment with the agency will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes but is not limited to a national police history check, referee checks, code of conduct check and an employment history integrity check.
Some positions within Services Australia may be required to work in settings where mandatory vaccinations are required. Staff in such positions will need to demonstrate that they meet the vaccination requirements or have a relevant exemption.
