The platform is completely free to read, ad-free, and nonpartisan, prioritizing accessibility and integrity over commercial interests. Volunteers joining The Sentinel contribute to a mission-driven media outlet focused on human-centered storytelling and public service journalism.
Role Description The Journalist (Volunteer) will contribute full time in a remote capacity, producing original reporting and narrative pieces aligned with The Sentinel’s editorial standards. Day-to-day responsibilities include researching stories, conducting interviews, verifying facts, and writing news articles, features, and personal narratives rooted in lived experiences. The journalist will monitor current events, identify relevant story angles, and collaborate with editors and other contributors to refine content and ensure clarity, accuracy, and impact.
Additional tasks may include drafting press releases related to major initiatives, engaging with community sources, and participating in virtual editorial meetings. This role is designed for individuals committed to public-interest journalism and willing to contribute their time and expertise to a nonprofit, citizen-focused media outlet.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated skills in Writing and News Writing, with the ability to produce explicit, compelling, and accurate stories for diverse audiences.
- Experience with Press Releases and Broadcasting, including communicating key information effectively across written and audio/visual formats.
- Strong Research abilities, including source verification, fact-checking, and synthesizing information from multiple perspectives.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail, tone, and editorial guidelines.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment, manage multiple assignments, and meet agreed-upon deadlines.
- Interest in citizen journalism, mental health storytelling, global current events, and inclusive representation of marginalized voices.
- Prior experience in journalism, media, or related fields is beneficial; formal education in Journalism, Communications, or a similar discipline is an asset but not required.
- Comfort with digital collaboration tools and a willingness to receive and incorporate editorial feedback.
