The Role The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.

The APS 6 Work Health Safety and Environment (WHSE) Specialist works within the Chief Operating Officer Division of the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA) and contributes to the safe, secure and effective delivery of Australia's nuclear-powered submarine enterprise.

The role operates within an integrated workforce supporting ASA and key delivery partners, including Commander Fleet Base West (COMFBW), which leads nuclear support activities and AUKUS submarine visit operations at HMAS Stirling. COMFBW is accountable for the safe, secure and effective operation of nuclear support activities at HMAS Stirling and coordinates submarine visits under ASA technical authority.

The APS 6 Work Health Safety Specialist will:

- Contribute to the development, implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of ASA / ADF safety management system, governance, policies and procedures.
- Provide specialist advice and support across safe systems or work, governance, assurance, risk, incident management and organisational learning activities.
- Support WHSE governance, assurance and compliance activities associated with nuclear support operations, AUKUS submarine visits, infrastructure development and emergency preparedness activities conducted by ASA and COMFBW at HMAS Stirling, WA.
- Collect, analyse, interpret and report on data to support decision making and continuous.
- Support assurance activities, audits, risk assessments, investigations, corrective actions and governance reporting.




- Work collaboratively across the broader internal and external WHSE community and with other work health and safety specialists to provide good outcomes.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders on complex WHSE matters, anticipating and responding to stakeholders’ needs and expectations to achieve work unit and ASA / ADF Evaluate activities and processes for compliance with WHS and Environmental legislation, policies and procedures relevant to the ASA and the ADF. Coordinate and manage the development, implementation, monitoring and performance reporting of WHSE statistics.

You will work within an integrated ASA workforce and collaborate closely with Commander Fleet Base West (COMFBW), which is responsible for the safe, secure and effective conduct of nuclear support activities at HMAS Stirling and the coordination of AUKUS submarine visits and future Submarine Rotational Force-West activities.



COMFBW operates as a hybrid Navy and APS organisation under ASA technical authority, supporting nuclear safety, security, safeguards and emergency preparedness outcomes.
