We are looking for a hands-on BI Developer (Cognos / Power BI) role within an applications managed services team, responsible for the stability, performance, and evolution of a critical enterprise reporting environment built on DataStage, Cognos, TM1, and Oracle. You will act as a key technical owner for the BI layer, providing L2/L3 support for Cognos and Power BI, maintaining and enhancing reports and data models, and supporting the ongoing modernisation of legacy Cognos assets into Power BI. The role offers exposure to a broader data landscape, including Oracle, Snowflake, and AWS-based integration, and the chance to make a visible impact on the quality, timeliness, and usability of finance and operational reporting.
What you’ll do
- Provide L2/L3 production support for the IBM Cognos and Power BI reporting environments, including incident management, problem resolution, and root cause analysis for report failures, performance issues, and data discrepancies.
- Maintain and enhance existing Cognos reports, dashboards, and packages (Report Studio, Query Studio, Analysis Studio, Framework Manager), ensuring alignment with business requirements and optimal performance against Oracle data sources.
- Design, develop, and maintain interactive Power BI reports, dashboards, and data models (using DAX, Power Query, and dataflows) to support finance, operations, and executive reporting needs.
- Support and execute the ongoing migration and modernisation of legacy Cognos reports to Power BI, including requirement validation, data model design, report rebuild, testing, and user adoption support.
- Develop and optimise SQL queries and views in Oracle to support Cognos and Power BI solutions, working with DBAs and data engineers to ensure efficient, accurate, and secure data access.
- Integrate and validate reporting against DataStage-populated Oracle data marts/warehouses, ensuring consistency between ETL outputs and BI layer metrics and resolving data quality issues in collaboration with the DataStage team.
What we’re looking for
- 3+ years’ hands-on experience as a BI developer in an enterprise environment, with solid expertise in IBM Cognos (10.x/11.x/Analytics) and Microsoft Power BI.
- Advanced proficiency in Cognos report development: Report Studio, Query Studio, Analysis Studio, and Framework Manager, including packages, prompts, filters, calculations, and complex multi-source reporting.
- Advanced proficiency in Power BI development: data modelling, DAX, Power Query (M), dataflows, incremental refresh, row-level security, and publishing/maintenance of datasets, reports,
and dashboards in Power BI Service.
- Strong SQL skills with Oracle: ability to write, tune, and troubleshoot complex queries, views, and materialised views; understand execution plans and performance implications for BI workloads.
- Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts (star/snowflake schemas, conformed dimensions, fact tables) and experience consuming DataStage-populated Oracle data marts/warehouses in Cognos and Power BI.
- Experience providing L2/L3 application support for BI platforms, including incident management, SLA-driven response, on-call or after-hours support as required, and participation in problem management and root cause analysis.
- Relevant IBM Cognos and or Microsoft Power BI certifications or formal training
