Chosen Family fosters a community-centric ecosystem that embraces diversity, flexibility, and enrichment for all. We continuously reimagine how our services can create platforms for equality, inclusion, and belonging. Committed to a culture of acceptance, we ensure that everyone is welcomed and valued. Recognising the interconnectedness of our humanity, we strive to empower individuals to live independently. By honouring each person’s unique identity and experiences, we celebrate and uplift one another in return.

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking a compassionate, patient, calm and emotionally grounded Female Disability Support Worker to support a participant based in Cremorne Point, NSW. This role is suited to someone who takes a trauma-informed, person-centred and neurodiversity-aware approach and understands the importance of building trust, encouraging independence and supporting meaningful community participation.

The participant may experience periods of overwhelm and benefits from clear, direct and respectful communication. The ideal worker will be encouraging and collaborative rather than overly directive, helping the participant make decisions and participate at her own pace.

Experience supporting people with mental health challenges, neurodivergence and complex trauma backgrounds is highly regarded.

Responsibilities of the Role

- Support the participant to increase community connection and reduce social isolation.
- Assist with exploring and accessing volunteering opportunities and meaningful activities.
- Provide community access and support participation in social and recreational activities.
- Drive and transport the participant to appointments, activities and community engagements.
- Provide appropriate support when the participant is using public transport.
- Support decluttering, organising and managing belongings.
- Assist with identifying and selling unwanted items as part of the participant's goals.
- Support the participant in developing a more organised and minimalist lifestyle.
- Provide calm,

reassuring support during periods of stress or overwhelm.
- Encourage confidence, independence, choice and self-determination.
- Build a consistent, respectful and trusting qualified relationship.
- Use trauma-informed and positive support strategies appropriate to the participant's individual needs.
- Maintain accurate progress notes and relevant records.
- Communicate professionally with the participant and Chosen Family team.
- Respect the participant's individual identity, values, preferences and lifestyle choices, including her vegan lifestyle.

The Ideal Support Worker

We are particularly looking for someone who:

- Is female, preferably within a similar age range to the participant.
- Is calm, patient, compassionate and emotionally grounded.
- Has strong life experience and emotional maturity.
- Uses a trauma-informed and person-centred approach.
- Has a good understanding of neurodiversity.
- Ideally has neurodivergent lived experience or significant experience supporting neurodivergent people.
- Has experience supporting people with Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, PTSD, trauma backgrounds and epilepsy/seizure disorders.
- Has experience supporting people experiencing mental health challenges and alcohol-related concerns.
- Communicates clearly, directly and respectfully.
- Understands that collaboration and encouragement are often more effective than being directive.
- Is confident supporting community access and social participation.
- Is confident driving and providing community transport.
- Can appropriately support someone using public transport.
- Is LGBTQIA+ and queer-friendly.
- Respects diverse identities, lifestyles, values and personal choices.
- Respects and is comfortable supporting a participant who follows a vegan lifestyle.

- Is reliable, consistent, flexible and committed to building genuine rapport.

What We Are Looking For

The right person will be more than someone who can simply complete support tasks. We are looking for a worker who can build trust, provide consistency, encourage independence and help the participant reconnect with her community at her own pace. A calm presence, strong communication skills, patience, flexibility, emotional maturity and genuine respect for autonomy will be essential.

This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference by helping someone develop confidence, connection and greater participation in everyday life.
