Position Information

The Evans Intensive English Centre (IEC), based in Blacktown, provides an intensive English language program for newly arrived students learning English as an additional language or dialect. As the largest IEC in NSW, Evans attracts a large cohort of students primarily from a refugee background. The highly experienced staff support students to develop their English language skills, become familiar with the Australian school system and build the confidence needed to succeed in mainstream schooling through an integrated social model with Evans High School. Students typically attend for 6–12 months, depending on individual needs, before they transition into mainstream classes at their local school or other destinations. They come from a range of cultural and language backgrounds and are supported by staff working closely with families and schools to ensure a smooth transition into mainstream education.

Selection Criteria

Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria,

- Demonstrated ability to lead inclusive practices that support the wellbeing, engagement and participation of newly arrived students, including the capacity to work collaboratively with families, staff and external agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to lead effective transition processes for students including building strong partnerships with schools, students, families and relevant staff to ensure continuity of successful engagement in the next stage of education.
- Demonstrated capacity to lead whole-centre initiatives that strengthen EAL/D teaching and learning practices which build staff capacity, students' English language proficiency, and achieve positive learning outcomes.

General Selection Criteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum,



assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy

Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching prospect.

Additional Information The IEC executive has oversight of IEC school processes and procedures, including the initial enrolment of students.The IEC executive plays a pivotal role in the development of the School Excellence Plan (SEP) and works collaboratively with the senior executive of the school to achieve the agreed strategic directions.

This position includes: day-to-day operations, hiring of new temporary and casual staff, including the approval of temporary engagement contracts, development of IEC staff role statements, ensuring effective management of student enrolment demands and processes, teaching and learning programs, student wellbeing and discipline programs, staff and student wellbeing, performance and development requirements for teaching and non-teaching staff, parent and community engagement and student assessment and reporting.
