Primary objective To protect Aboriginal sacred sites by assisting with investigation compliance and education activities, liaising with custodians and stakeholders, and providing information in accordance with the Northern Territory Aboriginal Sacred Sites Act 1989 (NTASSA).

Context statement The Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority is an independent statutory Authority established by the NTASSA,



designed to effect a practical balance between the recognised need to preserve and enhance Aboriginal cultural tradition in relation to certain land in the Territory and the aspirations of Aboriginal and all other peoples of the Territory for their economic, cultural and social advancement by providing advice on the protection of sacred sites in the context of development.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Receive and assess enquiries relating to sacred site concerns and assist with investigations and prosecutions where required.
2. Consult with a wide range of stakeholders including Aboriginal custodians and landowners in relation to assessing Aboriginal

custodian concerns and investigating allegations of sacred site damage.
1. Provide information on enforcement activities undertaken in compliance with the NTASSA.
2. Assist with the development, implementation and review of policies and procedures in support of the compliance and

investigation work of the Authority.
1. Assist with the assessment of applications for access to information in accordance with the Information Act 2002.
2. Contribute to the Authority’s public education program about its role and services relating to the protection of sacred sites.
3. Undertake research and strategic projects that support the priorities of the Authority.

Selection criteria

Essential

1.



Demonstrated experience to conduct investigations including identifying, collecting, and compiling evidence.
2. Experience in assessing and researching complex issues, analysing risk and presenting options with comprehensive

recommendations.
- Demonstrated experience to communicate complex issues to a wide range of stakeholders using oral and written communication skills.

1. Demonstrated ability to deliver outcomes to a high standard on diverse projects and manage a high workload with competing

deadlines.
1. Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team and with people from diverse cultural and qualified backgrounds.
2. Ability to acquire and retain knowledge of processes and procedures with a high-level computer skill, including database use

and navigating mapping programs such as Google Earth Pro.
- Willingness and ability to travel and undertake remote fieldwork via vehicle or air charters.
- Hold a Manual Driver’s licence and be confident driving a large manual vehicle.

Desirable

1. Knowledge of the Northern Territory Aboriginal political context in which the NTASSA operates.
2. Prior experience working in Northern Territory cultural heritage, land rights or native title.
3. Formal qualification in conducting investigations.
