Melbourne Farmers Markets
Victoria
Melbourne Farmers' Markets champions real food; grown in a way that respects the earth, sold in a way that supports its makers and offered in a way that connects communities.
Nurturing local, values-aligned food businesses, we run three established weekly markets at Carlton, Coburg and Alphington, a commercial kitchen at the Alphington Community Food Hub, and urban storage and distribution solutions for primary producers and small food businesses.
OVERVIEW
Melbourne Farmers' Markets is seeking to appoint a non-executive director to the Board. This voluntary position presents a unique prospect to support the direction of the business and the sector.
We are developing a skills-based board, and candidates with brand strategy experience are encouraged to apply. Specifically, the Board is seeking an individual who can contribute at two levels.
In addition to general director duties, contribute specifically by:
- Guiding the stewardship of the brand, including how the organisation articulates its purpose and distinguishes itself in a crowded events and food space.
- Identifying and testing proposed collaborations, sponsorships and commercial arrangements against brand integrity and the values of the organisation.
- Advising the Board on brand positioning as the organisation diversifies its income beyond market stallholder fees.
- Overseeing the brand and customer measures reported to the Board and bringing a shopper and community perspective to Board discussion.
And, working directly alongside the operational team, contribute practical capability by:
- Working with the executive team to develop and document a brand positioning and messaging framework the organisation can apply consistently.
- Reviewing campaign concepts, key messages and creative before they go to market, and giving practical, usable feedback.
- Advising on brand application across market signage,
stallholder materials and on-site presence.
This is a working directorship. Melbourne Farmers' Markets is a small organisation with a lean operational team, and the Board contributes capability as well as oversight. We are looking for people who will both govern and roll up their sleeves; a director who can only attend meetings and set direction will not be able to make the contribution the organisation needs. The candidate will ideally have senior experience in brand strategy or brand management, and either hold governance experience or be willing to develop it.
ROLE DETAILS
Term: 2 years, with the option to renew for a further term, subject to Board approval.
Board meetings: 11 per year, of approximately 1.5 hours each, held online.
Attendance: A minimum of 80% attendance at Board meetings is expected.
Working commitment: Approximately 8 to 10 hours per month beyond Board meetings, comprising direct support to the operational team, subcommittee participation and attendance at markets. This is a genuine commitment and applicants should satisfy themselves that they can meet it.
Remuneration: This is a voluntary position.
Insurance: Directors and Officers (D&O;) insurance is provided.
APPLICATIONS To express your interest in this role, please provide:
1. a resume detailing your relevant experience and qualifications.
2. a cover letter - or a video of no more than three minutes - outlining your interest in the role and in the mission of Melbourne Farmers' Markets, your brand experience, and your availability to provide the practical support described above.
Please submit your application via email to
