About the role
The State Solicitor's Office (the Office) is seeking an experienced and highly capable Principal Legislation Officer to join the Advice, Policy and Public Law (APPL) section. This position is offered as an initial 12 month fixed-term opportunity, with the possibility of a 12 month extension and permanency subject to securing ongoing funding.
This is a unique opportunity to work at the centre of government, supporting the development and delivery of complex and high-priority legislative reform initiatives. Working closely with the Deputy State Solicitor and other lawyers within the APPL team, you will coordinate the development and progression of complex and time-sensitive Bills through Parliament.
Operating in a fast-paced environment, you will work collaboratively with legal practitioners, government agencies and stakeholders to manage multiple legislative reform initiatives from development through to enactment. You will undertake research and analysis, prepare drafting instructions and Cabinet submissions, coordinate consultation processes, and identify risks and implementation considerations to support informed decision-making.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate:
- Significant experience in developing and instructing on complex legislation
- Ability to undertake complex research and analysis to identify risks, implications and implementation considerations.
- Significant experience in preparing drafting instructions, briefing materials, Cabinet submissions and similar documentation.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Parliamentary Counsel, government agencies and stakeholders
- Ability to manage competing priorities, build productive relationships and work effectively within a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
