About the role
As the leader of Wyndham City's First Nations Unit, you will provide high-level strategic advice and guidance to Council to advance outcomes for First Nations peoples in Wyndham.
Providing leadership, supervision and support to the First Nations Unit team, you will foster a positive and collaborative environment while mentoring others and building organisational capability.
Drawing on your cultural expertise and strong understanding of First Nations communities, you will provide strategic guidance to strengthen Council's cultural capability and help Council ensure our operations, services, projects and policies are culturally safe, responsive and inclusive.
You will lead a consolidated approach to First Nations self-determination, inclusion, equity, cultural safety and reconciliation, and advise on the development and implementation of strategies, policies, programs and initiatives across the organisation.
With your well-developed relationships with Victorian First Nations communities, you will continue to build and maintain meaningful relationships with First Nations communities and stakeholders, managing partnerships and relevant projects, and support a self-determined approach to initiatives such as days of significance and contributing to improved employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

What your day will look like
Lead and support the First Nations Unit team, providing direction, feedback and guidance to achieve organisational and project outcomes.
Provide strategic advice and guidance on reconciliation, self-determination, inclusion, equity and cultural safety across Council.
Lead the development and implementation of strategies, action plans, policies and initiatives that advance outcomes for First Nations peoples.
Build and maintain strong relationships with Traditional Owner groups, First Nations communities, Aboriginal businesses and government and community organisations.
Support meaningful First Nations community engagement, applying appropriate cultural protocols and self-determination principles.
Provide cultural expertise and guidance to strengthen Council's cultural capability and ensure services, programs, projects and policies are culturally safe and responsive.
Oversee Council's approach to how we recognise days of significance, supporting meaningful and self-determined opportunities for First Nations staff and community members.
Prepare high-level reports and briefings for Council on emerging issues, trends and opportunities affecting First Nations communities.
Mentor and support colleagues and teams to build organisational capability in First Nations engagement, cultural safety and community development.
What you will bring
Degree or diploma course involving Social Sciences, Community Development, Indigenous Studies, Public Policy, or Social Work and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities or at least five years of experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and policy development, preferably within local government, with a focus on advancing First Nations self-determination, inclusion, equity, cultural safety and reconciliation.
Strong knowledge and understanding of First Nations community engagement, cultural protocols, self-determination and cultural safety.
Well-developed relationships with Victorian First Nations communities, including Traditional Owner groups, Aboriginal businesses and government and non-government services.
Demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships and influence positive outcomes with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including senior and executive leaders.
Experience leading, motivating and mentoring individuals and cross-functional teams to deliver organisational and project outcomes.
Strong knowledge of community and program development principles and practices, with the ability to apply this expertise to emerging issues and opportunities.
