NEN Consulting is an Australian utilities and infrastructure consultancy.
We help major Australian infrastructure projects and property developments de-risk their utilities engagement, from grid connections and high voltage engineering to data centre power, private and embedded networks, and public lighting design.
Our team of engineers, consultants and designers brings over 100 years of combined industry experience, and we're proud to be nimble enough to stay genuinely hands-on with every client and project.
Our values — Knowledge, Results, Integrity, Respect and Collaboration — shape how we work with clients and with each other.
We take pride in simplifying complex utilities problems and delivering accurate, reliable outcomes for the infrastructure projects that keep Australia moving.
About the Role
We're looking for a Graduate Electrical CAD Designer to join our Melbourne CBD team, working across both electrical design and NEN's Public Lighting Design (PLD) division.
You'll start out producing CAD drawings and supporting our senior designers on electrical and infrastructure projects.
From the get-go, we'll train you in public lighting design, covering everything from lighting calculations and modelling to site audits and Australian Standards (AS/NZ****) compliance.
No prior lighting design experience is needed; this is a genuine on-the-job growth pathway, supported by our Public Lighting Design Manager and Engineering Manager.
This role sits within our Public Lighting Design team and reports to the Public Lighting Design Line Manager, with a close working relationship with our Electrical Engineering Team.
You'll provide technical and project support across both electrical and public lighting projects including large Electrical infrastructure projects including Data Centres and Transport and lighting designs for streets,
parks and public spaces.
What You'll Do
Produce CAD drawings for preliminary and construction design (electrical and public lighting)
Learn and apply lighting calculations and modelling using tools such as DIALux
Support lighting audits and site assessments as your capability develops
Apply relevant design standards and guidelines across projects
Research products and technologies to support design decisions
Help prepare reports, proposals, tools, templates and procedures
Liaise with clients and contractors under the guidance of senior staff
Support delivery across multiple projects at once
About You
Cert IV or higher technical qualification, preferably in Electrical Engineering (or working towards one).
You could also be an Electrician who would like to move to an office-based role.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD
Proficient in Excel and the wider Microsoft Office suite
Solid written and verbal communication skills
Desirable (or willing to learn — we'll train you)
Some exposure to lighting or network design concepts
Familiarity with project management methodologies, tools or practices
Awareness of public lighting standards (full training provided)
You'll also bring
Professional and self-motivated demeanour
Customer-centric attitude with a genuine desire to get it right for clients
An analytical and technical problem-solver
Resilient, adaptable and able to think on your feet in complex delivery environments
A clear communicator who works well in cross-functional teams
Innovative and solutions-focused
Why Join NEN
A unique opportunity to straddle both electrical CAD and specialist public lighting design
Exposure to major Australian infrastructure and utilities projects from day one
A close-knit, experienced team that genuinely invests in developing graduates
