Description The prospect Each year, Tableland Veterinary Service employs between three and five new graduates across our group of eight clinics across Far North Queensland.
The role is a fairly balanced mixed practice position encompassing small animals, equine, dairy cattle and beef cattle.
The Malanda clinic is home to around nine of our veterinarians, five veterinary nurses and also the main administrative hub of the broader TVS business.
Our Malanda clinic hosts final year veterinary students from James Cook University, and has an extensive cattle handling facility with two undercover crushes and yards, along with student accommodation and lecture facilities.
The Malanda Equine Hospital facilities include a fully equipped surgical theatre, induction box, hoist, horse crush, stables and day yards.
Diagnostics include in-house haematology and biochemistry capabilities, mobile digital X-ray, multiple ultrasound machines (small animal, equine rectal, bovine rectal) video- and fibreoptic endoscopy, mobile horse crush, tonometry, etc etc!
Opportunities exist for in house training and mentorship from our senior veterinary staff who hold a range of post graduate qualifications including multiple ANZCVS memberships, Masters and PhD degrees.

At the end of your first year, we would hope that you would be proficient or working towards accreditation in some or all of the following skills: Able to confidently perform routine small animal surgery, including cat and dog spey and castrate, lumpectomy, leg amputations and foreign body removal.
Comfortable with cattle and equine obstetrics,



and able to correct most malpresentations; Confidently use a power float to perform a routine equine dental; Able to perform 14-day follicle scans in mares; PregCheck and BullCheck accredited.
The day to day role TVS has considerable experience employing and supporting graduate veterinarians through their first veterinary positions.
We recognise the need for balance between structured support and mentorship, and the opportunity to take on increased responsibility.
Every graduate learns at a different pace, requiring variable levels of supervision.
We believe that regular and open communication is the key to finding the balance between providing support and the freedom to learn.
A typical day may include: Routine and first opinion small animal consultations including vaccinations and health checks, skin conditions, lameness, ear and eye consultations, sick animals, tick paralysis, snake bites and other emergency presentations.
Routine small animal surgery and procedures, including desexings, lump removals, dentistry and wound treatments.
Ambulatory cattle farm visits, including calvings, sick cows, routine surgeries, lame cows, pregnancy testing and other emergency visits.
Ambulatory equine farm visits, including colic management, stitch ups, ophthalmic conditions, vaccinations, dentistry and other first opinion visits.
Our ideal candidate Our ideal candidates will be passionate about mixed practice and eager to apply their university learnings across a range of companion animal, dairy and beef cattle and equine caseload.
To thrive in this role, you should be a confident yet humble graduate, who can relate to people from all walks of life and have strong interpersonal skills.
An ability to work independently and be adaptable is important, although there is plenty of support from clinic colleagues, our experienced nursing team and the senior vets across our group.
