Position: Wall and Floor Tiler Position Type : Full-Time Salary: $79,500 to $80,500 plus 12% superannuation per annum Location: Hoppers Crossing VIC **** Company: R N Tiling Pty Ltd Our client R N Tiling Pty Ltd is seeking an experienced Wall and Floor Tiler to join their team to work on client construction sites across metropolitan Melbourne and surrounding areas.
The Wall and Floor Tiler is responsible for the preparation, waterproofing, set-out, installation and finishing of ceramic, clay, slate, marble, stone, glass and mosaic tiles on internal and external walls and floors, to provide protective and decorative finishes that comply with the National Construction Code, the relevant Australian Standards and the contract specification.
The position is a skilled trade role performed autonomously on active construction and renovation sites.
The occupant exercises independent trade judgement in assessing substrates, selecting fixing systems and materials, resolving set-out and tolerance issues, and delivering compliant, defect-free tiled surfaces within program and budget.
The position is critical to the company's capacity to service its contracted works and to maintain the quality standards on which its client relationships depend.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: Plan interpretation, site assessment and measurement •Reading and interpreting architectural plans, elevations, tiling layouts, specifications and finishes schedules to determine tile type, pattern, set-out and coverage.
•Inspecting substrates and site conditions prior to commencement and identifying defects, movement, moisture or falls that require rectification before tiling.
•Measuring and marking out wall and floor surfaces to be tiled, and calculating quantities of tiles, adhesive, grout, waterproofing membrane and ancillary materials.
•Reporting variations, access constraints and program risks to the Director and liaising with builders, site supervisors and other trades to sequence works.
Surface preparation and substrate rectification •Levelling, cleaning and preparing surfaces prior to tiling, including removal of existing tiles, adhesive residue, coatings and debris.
•Applying screeds, levelling compounds and renders to correct falls to floor wastes and to achieve a true, plumb and level substrate.
•Installing and checking movement joints, bond breakers, angle trims and edge profiles in accordance with AS **** (Ceramic tiles) and the National Construction Code.
•Priming substrates and confirming compatibility of adhesives and membranes with the substrate and tile type.
Waterproofing of internal and external wet areas •Applying waterproofing membranes to bathrooms, laundries, kitchens, balconies, terraces and other wet areas in accordance with AS **** and AS **** and manufacturer specifications.
•Detailing junctions, penetrations, hobs, floor wastes and internal and external corners,
including installation of bond breakers and reinforcing fabric.
•Observing curing times, conducting flood testing where required, and recording membrane type, batch and coat thickness for compliance records.
Set-out, cutting and shaping of tiles •Establishing set-out lines, datum points and reference grids to achieve balanced cuts, aligned joints and consistent grout lines across the work area.
•Cutting and shaping ceramic, porcelain, clay, slate, marble, stone, glass and large-format tiles to fit awkward spaces, curves, penetrations and junctions using wet saws, tile cutters, grinders, nippers and drill bits.
•Mitring edges, forming shadow lines and fabricating feature and decorative inserts where specified.
•Setting out and laying coloured tiles in patterns to create mosaic and decorative feature work.
Laying and fixing wall, floor and mosaic tiles •Mixing and applying adhesive, cement, mortar and rapid-set compounds to the correct consistency and coverage for the tile type and substrate.
•Laying and fixing ceramic, clay, slate, marble, glass and mosaic tiles on internal and external walls and floors to provide protective and decorative finishes.
•Applying the appropriate fixing method (notched trowel, back-buttering, spot-fix or full-bed) and using levelling systems to achieve compliant bed coverage and lippage tolerances.
•Laying floors of granolithic, terrazzo, cement and similar composition where required, and installing skirtings, stair nosings, tiled hobs, niches and benchtops.
•Checking levels, plumb, alignment and joint width progressively throughout installation and correcting deviations before adhesive cures.
Grouting, sealing and finishing •Applying cement-based and epoxy grouts, and installing silicone and flexible sealants to movement and perimeter joints.
•Cleaning, sponging and polishing tiled surfaces, and removing grout haze and adhesive residue without damaging finishes.
•Sealing porous tiles, natural stone and grout lines, and carrying out final detailing, protection and hand-over cleaning of completed areas.
•Repairing, replacing and making good damaged or defective tile work during construction and within the defects liability period.
Quality assurance, work health and safety, and client liaison •Undertaking quality inspections against specification and Australian Standards, and completing job records, site diaries, timesheets and compliance documentation.
•Complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act **** (Vic), site safety rules,
safe work method statements and job safety analyses, including silica dust control, respiratory protection, manual handling and use of personal protective equipment.
•Selecting, operating and maintaining hand and power tools, wet saws, mixers and dust-extraction equipment, and reporting faults and hazards.
•Ordering and receiving materials, managing stock and waste on site, and maintaining a clean and secure work area.
•Providing technical advice to clients, builders and designers on tile selection, layout, substrate requirements and finishes, and instructing and supervising apprentices and labourers.
Requirements: Essential • Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling (CPC*****) or an equivalent overseas trade qualification; or, in the absence of a formal qualification, a minimum of three years' full-time relevant post-qualification trade experience.
•A minimum of 12 months demonstrated full-time experience performing the duties of a wall and floor tiler on commercial and/or residential construction sites.
•Current Construction Induction Card (White Card — CPCCWHS****).
•Current Australian driver's licence and willingness to travel between client sites.
Desirable • Certificate III or statement of attainment in waterproofing, and registration as a building practitioner (waterproofing) with the Victorian Building Authority where the value of waterproofing work requires it.
•Experience with large-format tiles, natural stone, epoxy grouts and tile levelling systems.
•Elevated work platform, scaffolding or working-at-heights tickets.
•Experience supervising apprentices or small tiling crews.
•First aid certificate and silica awareness training.
Skills, Knowledge and Attributes •Ability to read, interpret and work from architectural plans, tiling layouts, finishes schedules and manufacturer technical data sheets.
•Sound applied numeracy for measurement, set-out, falls, quantity take-off and wastage calculation.
•Precision, spatial judgement, manual dexterity and a high standard of finish, with the physical capacity for sustained kneeling, bending, working at heights and manual handling of tiles and materials.
•Working knowledge of the National Construction Code and of AS ****, AS **** and AS **** as they apply to tiling and wet-area construction.
•Competence in the safe use and maintenance of wet saws, angle grinders, mixers, levelling systems, dust-extraction equipment and hand tools.
•Understanding of crystalline silica risk and of the controls required under Victorian work health and safety legislation.
•Effective communication in English sufficient to receive instructions, liaise with builders, other trades and clients, and complete site and compliance documentation.
•Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision, to plan and sequence work, and to work productively as part of a site team.
