Geotechnical Engineer – Technical Development, Diverse Projects and Career Growth
Cartledge Mining & Geotechnics (CM&G;) is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Brisbane office and contribute to the delivery of high-quality underground rock mechanics and geotechnical advice to mining clients across Australia and internationally.
This role is suited to an early- to mid-career engineer who enjoys solving practical mining geotechnical problems, developing technical capability and working with experienced specialists. You will contribute to technical analysis, modelling, site support and reporting, with structured guidance and increasing responsibility as your experience grows.

The Opportunity
Based in Brisbane, Queensland, you will support the delivery of underground rock mechanics and mining geotechnical projects, including data review, technical analysis, numerical modelling, site support, reporting and client communication. You will work alongside experienced engineers who will provide technical guidance, review and mentoring. Experience in open pit geotechnical work will be considered an advantage.
As your capability develops, you will take increasing ownership of technical tasks, project coordination and client interactions while contributing to a collaborative team and consistently high‑quality project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Delivery
- Contribute to geotechnical consulting assignments for mining clients.
- Undertake data review, technical assessments, design checks and risk evaluations for underground and open pit operations under appropriate supervision.
- Build capability in numerical modelling and engineering analysis.
- Develop practical, evidence-based solutions to geotechnical challenges with support from senior engineers.
- Prepare clear technical calculations, figures, reports and recommendations for review.
- Apply CM&G;’s technical quality and professional practice requirements.
Client and Team Engagement
- Communicate professionally with clients, site personnel and project stakeholders.
- Participate in project meetings, technical discussions and site activities.
- Assist with proposal inputs, scope definition and fee estimates.
- Build trusted working relationships through responsive, practical and technically sound support.
- Contribute ideas that improve project delivery and CM&G;’s service offering.
Learning and Capability Development
- Actively develop technical capability through mentoring, peer review and practical project experience.
- Seek and apply feedback to improve technical analysis, communication and project delivery.

Project Delivery
- Deliver assigned technical tasks safely, efficiently and to agreed quality requirements.
- Plan and manage personal workloads against project scope, budgets and schedules.
- Maintain accurate project records and communicate progress, risks and constraints promptly.
- Support project managers with coordination, reporting and client deliverables.
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will combine sound technical foundations with curiosity, explicit communication and a willingness to develop through varied consulting assignments.
You will ideally bring:
- Tertiary qualifications in geology, geotechnical engineering, mining engineering or a related discipline.
- Approximately 2 to 5 years’ relevant geotechnical or rock mechanics experience in mining, consulting or a related environment.
- Exposure to underground geotechnical engineering, ground support, excavation stability or operational mine support.
- Developing capability in geotechnical design and mine design software; experience with numerical modelling will be well regarded.
- Clear technical writing, communication and interpersonal skills.
- A practical, methodical and technically rigorous approach to problem solving.
- A willingness to learn, seek guidance and contribute positively to a collaborative team.
- Open pit geotechnical capability or experience will be considered an advantage.
- Willingness to travel to client sites when required.
- Full Australian working rights.
