About the job

Enablement Studio is looking for a Compute Specialist embedded within the Department of Defence at HMAS Harman, ACT. This is a hands-on end-user computing and systems administration role in a closed, multi-site Defence environment.

About the Opportunity

We are backfilling a Compute Specialist role within an established Defence directorate, stepping into an existing engagement as the current incumbent moves on. The engagement delivers and sustains critical ICT infrastructure and is aligned to the current Work Order term, through to approximately mid-2027. You will keep Windows and Linux server platforms, virtualisation and end-user computing services secure, available and compliant across geographically distributed sites, working alongside architects, network designers and cybersecurity teams.

What you'll do

- Administer Windows Server and Windows 10/11 Enterprise environments, including Active Directory, DNS, Group Policy and patching.
- Operate and support virtualisation platforms (VMware vSphere/ESXi and Hyper-V), managing VM lifecycle, performance, availability and capacity.
- Administer RHEL and Linux server platforms and supporting services in closed Defence settings.
- Run vendor-supplied automation (for example Ansible playbooks) for patching, configuration and compliance, validating execution and troubleshooting failed tasks.
- Support secure user access services, including Citrix remote access, balancing operability against security constraints.
- Apply endpoint and server hardening and least-privilege practices aligned to Defence security expectations,

and maintain compliance evidence.
- Coordinate Level 2, 3 and 4 incident, problem and change resolution with regional support, OEM vendors and service owners through to closure.
- Produce explicit as-built, as-configured and SOP documentation, and record incidents and changes in the ITSM tool.

What you'll bring

- Demonstrated experience building and administering physical and virtual servers, backed by relevant qualifications or certifications (for example a Bachelor degree in IT, Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate, or VMware VCP).
- Strong hands-on Windows Server and enterprise endpoint administration, with Active Directory and Group Policy depth.
- Practical Linux/RHEL administration and comfort operating across mixed Windows and Linux estates.
- Experience with virtualisation, patching and configuration management, ideally with automation tooling.
- A security-first approach, with the ability to work autonomously in classified, distributed and disconnected environments.
- Clear technical documentation and troubleshooting skills, and comfort working to ITIL-aligned service processes.
- Desirable: familiarity with the Australian Government ISM, ASD Essential Eight and Defence security frameworks, and ITIL Foundation or higher.

Clearance and Eligibility

- Australian citizenship is required.
- A minimum NV1 security clearance is required; an active clearance is strongly preferred and NV2 is desirable.
- Ability to work on-site at a Commonwealth premises and hold a building pass is required.
