About the Opportunity
Our client is a well-established commercial construction business based in Melbourne, delivering projects for corporate and commercial clients across the state. This is an excellent opportunity for an accountant looking to build their career within the construction industry, working in a collaborative, supportive environment that genuinely invests in the professional development of its finance team.
This is a part-time position of 25 hours per week, with genuine flexibility on how those hours are structured — our client is open to discussing a schedule that suits the right candidate.
Reporting to the Finance Manager, you'll support the day-to-day financial operations of the business across both Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, working closely with project teams, subcontractors and suppliers to ensure accurate financial records and the smooth running of project accounting activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Process Accounts Payable invoices and accurately allocate costs to the appropriate projects and cost codes
- Process Accounts Receivable, including receipting payments and raising progress claims and tax invoices
- Manage client and supplier portals, ensuring invoices are submitted and maintained in line with contractual requirements
- Complete daily bank and credit card reconciliations
- Process weekly payment runs in accordance with agreed payment schedules
- Follow up outstanding invoice approvals in line with Security of Payment Act requirements
- Establish recent projects within the financial system and assign workflow approvals
- Set up new suppliers and subcontractors within the accounting system
- Reconcile retention payable ledgers and coordinate retention releases
- Review and process weekly project timesheet allocations
- Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers on payment enquiries and account reconciliations
- Assist with management of the Bank Guarantee facility
- Maintain the company Asset Register
- Assist with month-end processes and financial reporting
- Support internal and external financial audits
- Contribute to continuous improvement of finance systems and processes
About You
- Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Accounting or a related discipline
- CA or CPA qualification (or actively working towards completion)
- Minimum 2–3 years' experience in an accounting role within the construction industry
- Sound understanding of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and project accounting principles
- Strong attention to detail and excellent numerical accuracy
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong proficiency across the Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work autonomously
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills across project and corporate teams
- Experience with Jonas Premier, Xero or similar accounting software highly regarded
- Previous payroll experience advantageous but not essential
