About the role Harvest Road is looking for an experienced Business Unit Manager – Farming to lead operations across New Norcia (8,032ha) and Koojan Downs (11,050ha) — two of WA's largest backgrounding properties, spanning over 19,000ha combined and located north of Perth near Moora. One manager leads all farming activity across both properties, working alongside Harvest Road's Backgrounding team — this role is dedicated to cropping, pasture and fodder production rather than cattle management.
This isn't just about running paddocks. It's about driving productivity, pasture and forage development, and unlocking the long-term potential of two major land assets — inside a fully vertically integrated beef business (Harvey Beef, Leeuwin Coast) backed by six generations of agricultural heritage.
The successful candidate will lead the next phase of development across these strategically important farming assets, including pasture improvement, soil health initiatives and productivity-enhancing capital projects. This role offers significant autonomy and accountability for both operational and financial performance,
with the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the business.
Main Responsibilities
(must be demonstrated in your application letter/resume)
You'll take full responsibility for day-to-day operations across cropping, pasture, irrigation and infrastructure, leading a team of 2 farm overseers and 3 machinery operators to hit production and safety targets. You'll develop and deliver annual farm plans, budgets and seasonal programs — working closely with agronomists to get the best out of every paddock and to keep soil health, water systems and technology adoption moving forward.
Harvest Road wants leaders who take genuine ownership of the numbers, not just the task list. If you're someone who thinks in seasons and years rather than just weeks, this is where that mindset gets put to real use.
Key responsibilities include
- Leading, coaching and developing a high-performing farming team, fostering a culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Managing workforce planning, employee development and performance management.
- Accountable for the operational and financial performance of the farming business unit, including budgeting, forecasting, cost control and capital expenditure planning.
- Monitoring and reporting on key performance indicators including productivity, pasture/crop performance and operational costs.
- Managing the cropping program (oats, barley, wheat, vetch and pivot-irrigated sorghum)
and chemical withholding periods to support fodder supply to the Backgrounding and feedlot operations.
- Working closely with the Backgrounding team on fodder supply, land condition and shared management decisions that affect both businesses.
- Identifying, developing and delivering capital projects that improve productivity, operational efficiency and long-term asset value.
- Driving adoption of precision agriculture technologies, digital farm management systems and data-driven decision making.
- Promoting sustainable land management practices that enhance long-term productivity and asset stewardship.
- Building strong relationships with internal stakeholders, contractors, suppliers and service providers.
Education / Experience / Skills
- Proven leadership experience in farming operations management — cropping, livestock, or mixed farming
- Robust knowledge of agricultural production systems, farm machinery and modern farming practices
- Solid grounding in agronomy, chemical use and weed management
- Comfortable developing and managing budgets, production targets and operational schedules
- Competency with farm technology, GPS systems and digital record-keeping
- Tertiary qualification in Agriculture, Agribusiness or similar highly regarded; ChemCert or equivalent an advantage
- Current driver's licence — HR/MC licence a bonus
- Visa sponsorship (482) considered for the right candidate — this role is not suitable for working holiday visa holders
