About Us
SS Electrics has been delivering electrical contracting, switchboard manufacturing and industrial automation solutions since 1989. Our team of more than 30 work across quarrying and heavy industry, food and beverage, grain and seed processing, water and wastewater, and large format commercial construction.
We design and build our own switchboards and control panels in house, then install and commission them on site. That means the drawings produced in our office are used every day by our own workshop and field teams, and the feedback loop is short.
The Role
Reporting to the Industrial and Automation Manager, you will develop and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts and supporting documentation for switchboards, motor control centres and control systems.
This is an office based role in Ballarat, working alongside project engineers and the panel shop. It suits someone who wants to understand the circuits they are drawing rather than simply trace markups, and who takes pride in documentation that is accurate and buildable.
We are open to a range of experience levels. If you are early in your career but sharp, methodical and keen to learn control system design, we would like to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce electrical schematic drawings, general arrangements, panel layouts and wiring diagrams for control panels and motor control centres.
- Develop control circuit designs including motor starters, VSD circuits, safety circuits, and PLC input and output schedules.
- Generate cable schedules, terminal strip layouts, bills of material and equipment lists from drawing data.
- Mark up and update drawings following design changes, site variations and as built feedback from commissioning teams.
- Maintain drawing registers, revision control and project documentation to company and client standards.
- Apply relevant Australian standards, including the AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 4024 and AS/NZS 61439 series, to design documentation.
- Liaise with project engineers, workshop supervisors, suppliers and clients to resolve technical queries.
- Contribute to the development and upkeep of drafting templates, symbol libraries and internal drafting standards.
Essential Requirements
- Demonstrated experience drafting in AutoCAD.
- Ability to read, interpret and produce electrical schematics and single line diagrams.
- Sound understanding of electrical components used in control systems.
- Strong attention to detail and a disciplined approach to revision control and documentation accuracy.
- Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work as part of a project team.
- Current right to work in Australia.
Highly Regarded
- Experience with AutoCAD Electrical and/or EPLAN Electric P8.
- Control circuit design experience, including motor control, interlocking and machine safety circuits.
- Exposure to switchboard and motor control centre manufacture.
- Familiarity with PLC, HMI and SCADA hardware from vendors such as Rockwell Automation, Siemens or Schneider Electric.
What We Offer
- Varied project work across multiple industries, rather than repetitive drafting on a single product line.
- Ongoing training and support to develop skills in AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN Electric P8 and control system design.
- Direct mentoring from our automation team and clear scope to grow into design engineering.
- Standard tools of trade including laptop and phone.
- A stable, established business with a robust forward workload.
How to Apply
Apply through this platform with your resume and a short cover letter outlining your drafting experience and the software you have used.
- Applicants must have the right to work in Australia. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
